They are not illegal, they are "out of status".  Just means they can't work (No EAD even if they have a SSN), and leaving the country becomes more difficult (AP).  But when we did our K1, I knew of people doing it because of the cost savings.

So the only illegals then are ones who entered without inspection? Is that what you are saying? Every person who has overstayed then isn't illegal, just out of status.   Like that is somehow different?  Still deportable.

The entire K1 needs an overhaul IMHO.  Bring someone here you only have to have prove that you have met once in the last two years?

But they dont really have any rights until the USC says so? Say hello to slavery.

How many threads are in the effects forum about staying with abusive spouses while waiting to adjust status?

I get why people choose the k1 and for some members here that I greatly respect it was the only viable option for them. Couldnt pay me enough to arrive in a new country without any rights though.

I agree. It's insane that people only have to have met once. You can't figure out if you want to marry someone after only meeting once. And it's like the perfect way for human traffickers to bring people in.

Then again people come here all the time with zero rights. Maybe having been from country where I have always been treated as a human being has narrowed my perspective on why someone would choose that for themselves, including those who enter without inspection.   The unfortunate part is being compassionate can lead to others wanting to take advantage.  However I know I cannot control another, only myself.  Thankfully I do not have to make decisions for others like the government does. It's easy to sit back and get angry when you are on the otherside of the fence.

I will be interested to learn today if my husband is coming home tomorrow or not. Off to the gym, have fun with this thread.

You said illegals can't get a SSN.  At least two of us have shown you they can.  If you still refuse to believe it, well I tried.

I wouldn't exactly call this a high quality source.

Seems like you just googled "illegal" and "DACA" and copy and pasted the first thing you saw that proved your point.

Not mention that your quote still doesn't address the "valid" and ".gov" portion of my question.

What was wrong with .gov link you were given.

You mean the application for DACA?

no

The SSA link describing how illegals with DACA get a SSN.

I know of some people that were part of an arranged marriage with no meetings prior to the wedding and they are doing fine.  You could also get married to someone you have dated for years and years that turn out to be different people once the wedding occurs.  The point is one never knows.

The guy that beat Roy Moore voted yes. He will be a one term senator anyway

He needs to run for re-election in a few years and the Dems don't want him to be Scott Browned.  The Alabama GOP needs to find a woman that self-identifies as a Native American to run against him.

That shouldn't even be an advise to people though. You shouldn't leave your spouse without a legal status. Skipping AOS should only be done if you get married and suddenly find yourself unable to pay for AOS because a huge unexpected financial thing came up. But it shouldn't be advice giving to someone who just wants to save on money because they are greedy. If you can't afford bringing your spouse over and do AOS, don't go through with the immigration process at all.

I'm not advising people to do it.  Just saying it is an option.   And while I agree with you that if you can't afford the whole process then you shouldn't even start it, people do it every day.  It's no different for them than illegals... They just want a better life for themselves.

Overstaying your visa is a deportable offense.  Delaying AOS is not.

We chose the K1 because we were engaged for almost 2 years, but wanted to get married in the US, so that was the only option for us.

I'm not going to even touch the "abusive spouse" issue, other than to say it has nothing to do with K1.  Even people who know each other for years end up in abusive marriages.

My fiance, and then spouse, didn't suffer from a "lack of rights".  She didn't want to go home when she got here, though she could have.  She didn't want to work, so she didn't.  She still doesn't.  She cleans house, cooks, and travels all over the world.  She thinks she has it pretty good.

Heck, I know people who never met their spouse until the day of the marriage, and they have been married for over 50 years.  Look at India.  Common practice there.
