had to re-send on GC expiration date.... can i still work?

I sent in my I-751 about 10 days before my GC expired. Today (the day my GC expires) I got my package back in the mail stating I'd sent in the wrong amount. No case number so I guess that means its not in the system yet but there was a stamped date on the I-751 form itself showing that I had initially sent it in before it expired. I'm hoping I'm not in trouble and that I can still work. I should've checked the website instead of going by the printed fee sheet that was mailed with the form I requested. (I actually copied that page to send together with my re-send).

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I have read here about problems with payments, I think everything will be fine as soon as you send the check in the propper way. I think they will consider that you filed on time. They will be sending you a NOA authorizing you to work and travel for one more year while they work in your aplication, (that is the most commun process that I have seen). Good luck !

There's something to be said about filing as soon as possible - i.e. 90 days prior to the expiration of one's GC. However, somewhere in the I-751 instructions, if I remember correctly, there's a passage about filing late. It says something to the effect that the applicant should explain why (s)he filed late so they can make a decision on whether or not to accept the late filing. I suppose including the explanation about the fee that you gave here and evidence of the earlier, timely filing should suffice. Either way, you're in a bit of a document situation until you actually receive the I-797 that formally extends your status and corresponding privileges.

Thanks for the reassurance. I think I'm ok....

We didn't want to risk filing earlier since we were out of the country for about a month and didn't want anything to come in the mail that we wouldn't be able to act on. We did eventually cut it kinda close but if the amount had been right, I think we might've gotten at least a receipt before my GC expired. I will be glad once this is over and we won't have to keep track of anything until another 10 yrs later! :-)
