Hello all, and thanks for the help preemptively!

My fiance is in Belgium, and due to pretty extreme family circumstances, we were unable to move forward with the K-1 visa. Our package had been sent to the U.S. Embassy so we were close to him being able to come here, but in taking care of my family and life situation, the time slipped away from us. It's been over a year. We reached out to the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and they responded with:

"Could you provide us with a comprehensive written statement that states the reasons that prevented you fro moving forward with the case at the time?"

My family was falling apart and I had terminally ill members to take care of. They are still alive, but things are much, much calmer and more stable now (family members are settled, I got a great new job with more money), and we want to move forward with the process.

Does anyone have any advice on how to phrase all of this to the Embassy, or anything else to include? If we could re-open our case from before that would obviously be heaven on earth and a massive relief as opposed to re-filing so I thought I'd ask. Thanks again!

It sounds like they want you to provide them with exactly what you just described in your post.  Just provide them with specific details as to what events and situations happened, when they happened, where they happened, evidence of them occurring, and how that prevented you from being able to complete the process.  Compile that into a written document and end with explaining why you want to move forward at this time and how the situation has resolved to allow you to move forward with the process.

Example:

To whom it may concern,

Thank you for your response and willingness to review our situation.  In (date) due to some unforeseen and unexpected circumstances my family required a significant amount of my time and resources due to (situation).  I have included supporting documentation to demonstrate the gravity of the circumstances in addition to my explanations.  Since then, my families health has improved and we are in a position to move forward with the visa process.  Thank you for your consideration.

- Explain the situations leading up to the delay

- Explain how they impacted you and prevent you from moving forward in the process

- Provide documentation.

This is how I would handle it, I'm not an attorney and I'm sure some more veteran members might be able to give you better advice.  Hopefully this input may help.
