You can't have your interview before your 3rd or 5th GC anniversary? I always thought that's the case with only the oath ceremony date since that's the day you officially become an American citizen.

How can they approve you if you don't fit the requirements. So no they can't interview until after those dates, ive looked at past time lines with people for N400 filings and not one has been interviewed before the 3 year or 5 year requirement.  I would guess the only way that would happen if there was a special case or something.

Removal of Conditions..  TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK

Time to reset the tick tock clock again.   Roll my eyes.

GC  Conditional date:  05/26/2015

N400.  Application:      02/28/2018

Biometrics:                    02/22/2018

Waiting............    Roll my eyes again :(

That makes sense! Well, I am filing in May and I have been a GC holder for more than 10 years, the only reason I haven't filed yet is because I had broken my continuous residence in the past and had to wait. So hopefully I'll have my interview in the first 3 or 4 months after filing

Well if its not 90 days before whatever wait time you have for breaking residency, there is a good chance that after biometrics they will send you an interview, again it depends on field office, security checks and that you have filled the requirements for N400.  Good luck! :)

Yes I am actually waiting until after the 5th anniversary of my last long trip. My field office is Washington D.C. and I looked up some timelines for other folks and it seems like it takes them more than average. So all I have to do now is wait and see

Oh really, you know someone who has had an interview before their 3rd of 5th anniversary, please tell us more.  I haven't seen one case as of yet, but I guess there is always a chance of an exception.

Based on reading through this thread, I think my wife is an outlier.  She applied in January 2018 based on the three year rule (with a pending ROC) and two months before her 3rd anniversary as an LPR, she filed paper to the Chicago Lockbox, did her biometrics in mid-February and her interview is scheduled for tomorrow.  So the interview is after the 3 year anniversary date, but for some reason her application progressed very fast in Detroit.

Good Luck to everyone.

The legal requirement is that the anniversary occur before the oath ceremony, as MahUSA said.  The rest depends on facts and circumstances.

I see, I thought you had to fill requirements before the interview as how can they approve you if you dont fit their requirements. Do you know someone this has applied too?

They control when your oath is, so they can approve you at the interview and give you an oath date that's post-anniversary.  This is in response to whether it's possible.  As to whether it's likely in any individual case, I am agnostic.

Where have you found this information that they can approve you at interview before the 3rd year anniversary or the 5th year anniversary?  I googled this and couldnt find it, nor could I find a case where this happened albeit one which I shall copy and paste for your perusal.   The case could not be approved as it was within the 3 years, so it had to be delayed.  Hence, probably why I cant find any cases on here that are interviewed before their anniversary as it probably cases the immigration officer one huge  headache and also disappoints the applicant.

I applied for naturalization in May 2009 based on marriage to a US Citizen (after 2 years and 9 months) and had my interview yesterday, July 22 in Fairfax, VA. It went great, I passed it, then at the end the officer tells me: "Well, your file was processed very fast and your interview was scheduled too early, you passed but I can't approve you until your 3-year anniversary (which will be August 5) so you can't take the oath today. I'll stamp your file as approved on August 5, and then we'll send you a letter for the oath ceremony."

Has anyone here had a similar experience? If so, how long did you have to wait before you got the invitation for the oath ceremony?

I've read a number of horror stories about people having to wait months and months when they didn't take the oath the same day as the interview, so I'm somewhat worried.

Thanks.

I think you just answered your own question - that person's interview was scheduled prior to her anniversary, she was approved at the interview and given a later oath date (post-anniversary).  In many jurisdictions, same-day oaths aren't even an option so there's no reason to worry if you don't get one.  This is a largely academic debate anyway given processing times these days.  Most people are worried about taking too long, not the other way around.

Actually they were NOT approved at the interview, they were told they could not be approved until their 3rd anniversary and their interview was too soon. Again I do not see any cases that are interviewed too soon, they are pretty much are a fluke if that happens. What normally happens is that a month prior to the 3rd or 5th anniversary (security checks allowing and also field office waiting times) some people will be sent an interview later, normally for after their 3rd or 5th anniversary. It could be a day later from the anniversary, but it is normally after the anniversary.  I suspect with my field office processing times, I shall receive a letter around April 26th give or take a couple of days for interview, which will be after my 3rd year anniversary.

It's in the manual - there is no mention of interview date only qualifying on the date of naturalization.  The example you give supports this.

Yes and the example I gives also supports the fact that they could not be approved at interview, hence its rare to get an interview before the anniversary of residency be it 3 or 5 years.
