Quick question: I'd like to get my SS card with my married name but I don't have my EAD

1. How long will it take? I fear we will get an interview notice and we won't have the SS card in time for the interview. My husband (US citizen) needs to replace his too. Does he need it for the interview?

2. Will they even let me get a new one without an EAD?

Thanks all. Trying not to go crazy during this whole thing.

  1. The card usually arrives within a week or 2 upon successful application at the SSA. In all but the luckiest of cases, an I-765 filed at the same time as AOS will be approved and the EAD received (long) before the interview.
    1. Your USC spouse can request a new one at any time, if the one he has is lost/stolen/incorrect.
    2. No SSN (from either person) is needed for an interview.
  2. Do you already have an SSN?
    1. If so, it is hit or miss if the SSA office will issue one in a corrected name before the EAD (or green card if that comes sooner). Some will, others won't. It took my wife 3 visits before we got somebody able to push it through in her married name.
    2. If not, then generally you don't met the requirements to obtain one unless:
      1. You have at least 14 days of legal status left in the US, and
      2. Your legal status permits obtaining Social Security card (i.e. a tourist visa does not).

I do have an SSN but if the card is not required for the interview, I might not even bother until afterwards. My husband will definitely replace his though. Thanks for the info!!
