Hi,

I am a green card holder and would like to offer my foreign Nephew to stay with me for a year for doing his 11th or 12th grade of high school. There are a lot of questions:

What type of Visa should be used? Is it J1?

Do we need a sponsoring organization?

What kind of documentation is required for the school?

Will the school charge fees (public school)?

How early do I have to contact the school?

Could he graduate if he does 12th grade?

Thanks for any help!

Os

I just read somewhere that a j1 student cannot be hosted by a relative. So this probably wont work?

The fees for a public school would be about 15 thousand to cover the federal subsidy your nephew isn't allowed to get.  It is usually cheaper to find a private school that would issue the proper form.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I don't think it is possible in the sense that you want it to be. Sounds like you basically want a visa for your nephew through you to attend school.

The only options would be a student visa which requires you to provide evidence to show the school will be paid for. Another options would be exchange programs, but like mentioned, they would not allow relatives to participate otherwise it would open up opportunities for abuse (abuse of the program, not abuse of the child).

An international student can apply for an F-1 visa to attend a public secondary school (grades 9 -12) that is Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified. Regulations require that an F student may only attend public school for a maximum period of 12 months and that the student must reimburse the full, per-capita cost of attending.

An international student also has the option of attending an SEVP-certified private school as an F student. Unlike when attending a public school, an F student who attends a private school may attend for longer than 12 months.
