Perhaps they feel like the outcast in their "real" life and feel that they are somehow oppressed and perhaps making others feel that way on a forum is their form of revenge.

i would think those who are emboldened by the *net* do so because the risk is so low, and the emotional attachment is minimal. IRL i tend to speak my mind in *certain* situations, much like I do here. i cannot imagine people saying things they do here to an acquantaince's face. its fake.

Hmm... good question. This is a tough one for me because I don't think I have much in common with most of the MENA crowd other than having an SO from Morocco. I haven't run into any situations in outside of VJ even close to the ones on this board that would allow me to answer your question, however I am honest in real life also.

This has got to be some of the most ridiculous projection I've read in a while. People who say what they want aren't vengeful. Honesty is now due to being an outcast? How about some people get sick of the dramatic b.s. and call it like it is? Not everyone revels in other peoples' drama.

I'd like to know if those who are terribly passive aggressive online are so much so in real life, too.

I can think of several courses I took in which a sensitive topic was handled professionally/respectfully during debates or discussion.

to answer the original question -- yes I do, although I tend to be more outgoing in person. I restrain myself around people who don't know me our through the wonders of the internet misunderstand where I might be coming from. You don't know how long it takes me to write some posts on here because I want to make sure the words reflect the sentiment properly.

Anyone who thinks they're not at all different in person is wrong, simply because you don't get to use emoticons in meatspace and the magic 'no offense, imo' shield doesn't work as well in person. This is also a good argument for the differences between knowing your s.o. online versus in person.

I also suspect that it's likely that people are more likely to rant in a forum or get pissy in a forum or ask passive-aggressive questions in a forum, and I don't think that fact says anything particular about the individuals in question.

I'll answer for myself since it's my experience I don't have much in common with the MENA crowd. I don't know people like this in real life, so I haven't had the opportunity to interact with people like this, therefore, I can't say 100% I'd act exactly the same, although it's probably a safe bet I would.

What about people who have never used an emoticon and have never said "no offense, but..."? People who aren't passive aggressive, that is.
