He's not making it up. Quite certain of that. You don't think that Cotton and Purdue are also political opportunists? And that Trump himself isn't either?

So how can you tell it is Durbin telling the truth?

I think it is more to do then with just one incident in 2013, but whatever.  The simple fact is that Durbin is a political opportunist much like just about every politician in Washington.  He is certainly willing to lie for political reasons, and after Trump rejected his "bipartisan" immigration bill proposal that did nothing relative to protecting the border, I wouldn't be surprised that he is making the comment up which seems to have more backing than he has.

I found at least two occasions last week  where President Trump insisted on something -that was demonstrably untrue. The folks that "didn't hear" but then heard perfectly have their own issues.  Trump has zero credibility with me.

I don't really care, the exact wording is not critical, it does not change my view of the president.

They open their mouths.

There is nothing wrong to say that some countries are shitholes, it's just the truth.

People living in those countries are just victims of corrupt regimes/politicians/societies.

There is no reason to get offended.

Let's be a bit more pragmatic.

No one would ever choose to live in those countries, that's why there are so many immigrants from there.

Saying what a person believes in being the truth, isn't always constructive, and doesn't add anything to mutual respect.
I believe my neighbours live in a ###### house, I'm not going to tell them that, I just hope that they will find a way to improve. If I can help and they ask me I will be glad to help them where I can. They already know that their house isn't great, why should I humiliate them by telling them something they know needs improvement? And why would I humiliate them, even more, to tell them that I rather don't want them to visit me in my, what I believe to be, an awesome mansion? Instead, I really want my neighbours across the street who live in a big castle to come to my mansion and be my friends.

We'd have to look back to our Italian ancestors who had to put up with that nonsense.

I'd provide some links for historical context, but not VJ friendly.

Because I got a job offer in NYC, right out of university.

I loved it here, met my wife, got married, the whole thing.

I like the US more than Italy, that's for sure. However, some other people think otherwise, I guess it's subjective.

Aside from some places in Southern Italy (which I have no problem calling ****holes), Italy is a nice country, one of the wealthiest in the world.

Every country you go you will find places that aren't that great. Yes, even in America believe it or not.

And as far as for the wealth of Italy:

Italy still has the 8th (or 9th) highest GDP in the world.

Northern Italy is in fact one of the (if not the) wealthiest region in the whole EU.

Without being dragged by Southern Italy (and Rome and its corrupt system), Italy would be the wealthiest country in Europe, that's just a fact. If only Garibaldi minded his own business back then....

True, but some countries can be considered ****holes as whole, unfortunately.

And that has nothing to do with being a beautiful or ugly place. Some extremely beautiful countries are ****holes, in my opinion.
