SS# is a requirement to open an account to any bank. I don't understand why you can't get your SS#, maybe you check the box indicating that you are "legal alien allowed to work" instead "legal alien not allowed to work" so they asked your EAD. Try to go and get your SS# by checking the "legal alien not allowed to work" and bring with you your passport and original marriage certificate. Goodluck and God bless.

Your marriage certificate, proof that you live together (mail that was addressed to both of you, rental lease with both your names on it), your name on some utilities if possible, a "family plan" for your cell phones with both your names on it, Blockbuster/Hollywood Video card with both names, renter's/homeowner's insurance with both names (if possible without a SSN), signed and notarized affidavits from your family members stating the validity of your relationship.

Secondary information would be dated photos of your wedding and you two together since then. Those alone are not proof enough.

It depends on the branch and bank. I opened up a chequing account with no SSN or ITIN and I am the foreign spouse. All they required from me was a photocopy of my passport and K3 visa.

Why did you not go and get a SSN when you arrived on your K1..... as that will now be expired you will have to wait for EAD or Greencard.... try to find as much things as you can to show as evidence.... medical insurance cards, benificiary on your husbands 401k, letters for friends....

Good Luck

You should try another bank. My husband came in on the Visa Waiver and had no ssn, but they let him open his own checking account with just his passport (Bank of America and Wachovia)

I dont know why the bank denied you to join the account, you are not opening a new account...

My husband put me in his account in the first week that i got here, with no SS# and we were not married yet.

They just asked for my passport number. Then, when we got married to change the name i needed to show the marriage certificate, but even like this, they never asked for any other document, because i dont have any "power" over his account...

We had no problem adding my husband to my bank account and this was before he had a social security number. All he needed was his passport and visa. So maybe you should try a different branch of your bank if possible. We also have a family cell phone plan which shows both of our names. You don't need an SSN for that either.

good luck!

I also think it depends where you are coming from. If you are coming from asia or mexico they will take a deeper look at you since there are many visa fraud activities there. I experienced that, for example, europeans got most of the time very easy interviews. But you will make it :)
