My husband came her on a K-1 visa in late 2016. He got a social security card, we got married, and he got his green card. Now that he is a permanent resident, he needs to get a new social security card, correct? One that is valid for work by itself, instead of having the wording about being valid for work only with authorization. He's planning on going to the social security office soon, what documents does he need to bring? I've been trying to Google it, but it's difficult to find exactly this situation (already have a social security number, but need a different type of card).

I found this post on the Social Security website regarding documents needed by non-citizens.

https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10096.pdf

It says to bring this: Form I-766 (Employment Authorization Document, EAD, work permit)

He has a work permit from back before he was a permanent resident, but it's no longer valid. He doesn't need to bring that, correct?

Also, he lost his green card a few weeks after receiving it :(. We applied for a new one, and in the mean time he has the I - 551 stamp in his passport. That won't cause any problems, right?

Hopefully this can be a quick and easy answer by anyone who's already done this part of the process :)

Thank you in advance!

He doesn't NEED to get a new card, but he can get one if he wants. And yes, he doesn't need to bring his EAD, which is no longer valid since he has a GC.

I would also wait until he has his replacement GC. Maybe the I-551 is sufficient, but SSA offices don't always have the most capable employees around...

Thanks for the response!

It's just that he's starting a business soon and needs to provide a copy of his social security card, so we thought it best to get the proper card. But you're saying his old card will still work?

Yeah, it would be nice if we could wait for his replacement green card. But we requested the card about 4 months ago, so it could still be anywhere from 2 to 8 months until we get it!

Yes it will still work. If whomever then asks for the work authorization, you can provide a copy of the I-551 stamp.
