What is it with you and monkeys? ;)

Lol, I didn't even realize until you mentioned it. This is in our state and we were talking about going to one of those parks during spring.

Think we have to cancel.

Meh, don’t cancel.  Just don’t anger any monkeys! :)

Yeah, it is kind of worrisome that a scratch or a bite could end up in death.  Close to 50% fatality rate?  That seems way too high, with today’s meds available to us.

Correction - nearly 80% fatality rate.  Scarier than I thought!

There is no need to cancel. Nobody has been infected in Florida. Your chances of dying are probably about 100 times higher driving on the road to get there. Maybe a 1,000,000 times higher. I bet 99% of the only 50 injuries caused by monkeys in that last 25 years in florida(thats two a year) have been caused by people feeding the monkeys and I bet most of them were by people messing with them. All the wildlife officers need to do is show up and blast one or two of them with a shotgun. The rest of the group will have a new found fear of humans.

Lol, not messing with any monkeys. I never realized they could carry diseases like that.
Makes me think about all the places I've been where I was surrounded by this type of monkeys.

They are kind of obtrusive, especially when you have food.

Or getting bit by a rattlesnake or cottonmouth. Those show up around the house, so you're probably right.

Are you trying to make me move out of Florida?

Never eat raw oysters anyway, and who is crazy to swim with an open wound in salt water?

Lol, no not planning on doing some close up research on feces. As long as they stay away, because I've seen this little monkeys in Thailand come very close, they ain't scared at all. Especially if you carry food.

While I think you’ll be safe (no one has been infected by these terrible little FL monkeys, seeking to wipe out mankind), the key would be to seek immediate medical attention if you were to be bitten or scratched.  Those who die seem to be the ones who do not do this.  Can be fatal within 1 day to 3 weeks.

https://www.cdc.gov/herpesbvirus/firstaid-treatment.html

All of that being said... you’d be more likely to die from being hit by a school bus in a retirement community while riding a unicycle than from a Macaque bite.

What I do find ironic is that article posted says a recent study has shown the possibility of infection.  Yet the CDC has known for years about Herpes B in macaques.  Strange.  What isn’t very well known, from my reading, is how long the virus can live in desiccated feces.  That could be a very subtle and “mysterious” means of infection if one were walking in an area where they are abundant and poop.

Much greater chance of catching disease  from being around people. especially people in Wal*Mart. The unwashed masses

Ok, ok, I get it... I'm over worrying and it's more likely I drown in my pool or get bitten to death by my dogs etc. etc.

Reading the article again, there is actually not really a threat. Not what you would think when you read the headline. I assume that they want to get rid of the monkeys, and this is a way to gently massage it into the public's minds.

Meanwhile, I'm getting a little suspicious. I've been seeing a lot of monkey related news on my Facebook this week.

This popped up on my Facebook this morning.
