The first thing is you don't want to carry out dirhams because it is a closed currency and you will never be able to convert it to another currency outside of Morocco.

YMMV

So what is the work around?

The simplest way is to exchange 40,000 Dirhams for Dollars as l'Office des Changes route could be complicated (bureaucracy and stuff).

Presumably there is a sizable black market, tourist currency coming in.

Smaller amounts are currently allowed. We exchanged a small amount before and after our last trip in 2015. So it is a relatively recent change.

To OP: have your husband start inquiring at his bank or currency exchange place. I know it can be difficult for a Moroccan to exchange currency there, but there are people that will share their secrets. (That sounds shady, but it wasn’t meant to) as others have said, taking currency OUT of Morocco is very difficult. If he gets searched while leaving/boarding they can and will take the money.... not an easy feat to get back (if ever)

Basically, Residents of Morocco can legally ask the banks to provide them with around $2000 per trip, and a mx of $4000 per year. Note that the bank will stamp this in the passport, and the customs/police may search him while leaving the country. If carrying excess amount of cash with no valid documentation, you ll end up losing the cash, and may miss your flight....

Good luck

So as SaRy said you can take some money out of morocco but there is a limit. I brought back with me about 20000Mdhs, he or she could bring in more but at their own risk. if and when custom asks if they ask how much money they have they  can just tell them less the 20000 mdhs. most of the time they don't ask.

best of luck.
