I have several questions so I will ask them one at a time. I want to marry someone who I met through his brother and he is here now visiting. Is there a difference in the amount of time it takes to get a work permit or green card if you come on a fiance visa or if we get married and he comes back on a spouse visa? Is either process shorter than the other?

If they arrive on a CR1 (spouse) visa, they will have a green card and be able to work and travel outside of the country right away. If go the K1 (fiance) route, they will need to marry in the US and file for AOS/EAD/AP. It's currently taking anywhere from 3-5 months for work and travel authorization. The green card process can take anywhere between 4-12 months for K1 applicants adjusting status.

The way things currently are going regarding processing times, the K1 route may still be slightly faster, but overall it's more expensive and takes a lot longer to receive work authorization and the green card. It is also more expensive than the CR1 spousal visa overall.

Current total processing time for K1: Around 9-12 months from filing to POE, then another 3-4 months AFTER you get married for travel/work authorization, and anywhere from 4-12 months to green card in hand.

Current total processing time for CR1: Around 12-14 months, but they will have green card upon or shortly after entry to USA.

When did you meet him?  before or after he arrived?

the CR1 is less expensive in the long run

do not marry on the first meeting and visit

K1 use to be much quicker but these days it is taking almost a year too and it is over $1000 to do AOS after marriage in USA

Important things to know for enterview

1 the beneficary should know all things about the petitioner,  his/her family and life in the US where they would live

2 the family in Egypt should approve of the marriage as they will ask in the embassy

3 no big age difference as will take years to get approval (we did and took 6 years)

4 religion is important at that embassy

5 more than 1 visit to meet will be required as they like quality face time together

good luck

I can't figure out how to reply to you but I was introduced to him several months ago and we correspond almost daily via Whatsapp and have Skyped some. So technically I "met" him before he came here I guess? This is just the first time in person

So was intent to immigrate discussed prior to his arrival?

YMMV

When we talked several months ago he said that he liked it here and one day would like to live in a quieter place like this but would not be able to do that for some time. He has a very good job with the government where he lives and he is just starting to do consulting work of his own. After I met him in person I asked him what would be the soonest that he could realistically relocate and he said a minimum of one year.
