Hello, I want to know If I'm able to join the military with 1 year valid 1-551 stamped passport.

When I got here, immigration officer(?) said that I should wait for 5 to 6 months to get my green card. and he said that I can use the stamped passport as a green card for 1 year.

Here's my question, I wanna join the Army or Airforce as fast as I can. but on the internet the recruit center requires green card for enlisting.

Can I join the military with a passport stamp which proves my legal state before getting the green card??

Thanks for your information.

I honestly don't know for sure... need more information.

I can't tell exactly where you're at in your immigration process since you don't have a timeline linked. I'm assuming that you are the spouse of a green card holder - is that right? You've recently entered the US on your visa, and have gotten a stamp as a stop-gap until your green card arrives?

Or do you have a stamp because you're in the middle of "removing conditions" on your green card (2 years after you entered the US, if you hadn't been married to your spouse for 2 years already)?

If the recruitment officer wants to see an actual physical green card, you may have to wait. For most purposes, the passport stamp is equivalent to a green card, but some government-related jobs need a permanent 10 year greencard. It sounds as though, from what @Sad.wasi says, that if you are getting a conditional 2 year green card, that won't be enough, and you will not be able to enlist until you have removed conditions and have a permanent 10 year card.

If, however, you've been married for 2+ years at the time you  crossed the border, and you're waiting on a 10 year card, you'll be able to enlist as soon as you get it.

Is your timeline updated?

That's strange that means the rules must've changed. Before you should be able to join the Navy, Marines, Army with a conditional green card except the air force which has always required a 10 year green card. I wouldn't be surprised though because even the expidited citizenship in the military upon bootcamp graduation has been changed by Trumps DOJ.

You can join anything but the Air Force with the 2yr card, AF requires the 10yr. With the 2yr card, you must still be married to your spouse who petitioned you to enlist. Also gotta make sure you have tier one status, meaning your high school diploma has been evaluated and deemed equal by whatever company the recruiter advises to use or their educational specialist. You can't go in as a tier 2 with a green card

Also, non citizen are having to wait to ship til their complete background check is done; before a change of rules they could leave after it was started, just like citizens. Now they must wait for that and to speak to an background investigator if needed. This happened at the new fiscal year. You could wait up to 18mo now to ship out as a non citizen depending.

Thanks a lot. So now I'm sure that I can't enlist Air force for not having green card yet.

I came here as a permanent resident's under 21 year-old child. And I think I finished all the course for immigration cause I got immigration visa on my passport and registered selective service and Now I'm just waiting SSN and Green Card.

It depends on your recruiter and your MEPS, some will take the stamp others must have the card, I think you have to have the card by the time you leave DEP and ship out

After speaking with several recruiters a lot of this information is not correct. Has any one actually successfully joined that can give first hand experience?

So tell us what is correct then and not just say "it's not correct". Be advised that recruiters have been known to lie as well.
