Hi,

My husband has had a sufficient income for the year 2004, 2005 and 2006 to support me. In 2007 he became a student and does not have any income, except from the VA (GI-bill, hes been in the navy). He does own his own house.

Will we need a sponsor, or do they look at the past three years?

This is correct if the affidavit is filed in 2007 an the interview occurs in 2007 or very early 2008. The reverse can also work for people. An 06 student can annualize their current 2007 income from a new job and qualify. In no place does the form specifically ask for the last full year of income. It asks for current income. The most common answer is to use the last full year but it is perfectly acceptable to use you annualized current income.
