If you are planning on filing for his adjustment on status, he'd need travel authorization. If you are going abroad first and filing when you guys are back, he only needs a travel signature on his i20 from his school so that he can re-enter the US.

This can be problematic because he is entering on F1 with the intention to adjust to Green Card which is fraud. If at the border they realize this, his F1 will be void and he will be sent back packing. Any misrepresentation can also get him a 10 year ban.

Hi My BF and I plan to get married in 2 weeks. We had originally planned a trip back to his home country prior to our engagement. Would it be safe for us to travel back to his home country July 2018? His I-20 and F1 Visa are both current. Thanks for the help!

If you send the paperwork for AOS and you apply for Advanced Parole (it is a form you have to send along with AOS), you can be looking at 4 months until you get the paper that allows reentry. If you do this now you should be able to leave for the summer. Since he is a full-time student, leaving during the semester would be hard anyway.
