Someone mentioned blood donations...I completely forgot that they screened those for HIV. Durrrrrr, Friday brain! So I suppose in a way, yes...I have had HIV tests, though I've never gone specifically for one.

Yeah, if you give blood in the UK and they find something when they screen your blood, they will write to you and tell you to go for testing.

They also give you a nice red card with a National Blood Service hologram - which

was the only reason I went there to give blood :P

I got a t-shirt and a cookie in America. USA! USA! USA!

My point: I do not know anybody who ever had a STD, neither in Germany nor in the US.

Well, who would you have a conversation with where that would just roll out?

'Oh that Johnson deal was horrible, Bob, but I am glad that is over. Well, got to get to the VD clinic for my raging outbreak of genital herpes! Don't want to be late. Later'.

I am sure I would know some people all my life and they would never tell me that they had XYZ STD. In some cases, like with genital warts, it could be that they just don't know that they have it. Chlamydia is a devestating STD, but has next to no symptoms in women in many cases. They only find something out when they want to have children one day and can't. I think people have enough problems admitting to head lice let alone pubic lice.

I certainally would not believe for an instant that I have never met any one who had STDs. The odds seem impossibly against it.

I am really sure that my friends never had an STD. I am really close and first thing: none of them had several partners. I simply do not know people who had more than 3 partners in their life, which essentially narrows down your chance to get something like that. Also all my friends always request STD tests before they ever got intimate with anyone, for me that's the normal procedure unless you're partner is a virgin and never had a blood transfusion....

Considering that at least 60% of people who have sex at all get a form of HPV, and they don't test for it, I wouldn't be so sure. It's a good thing you are married because holding the idea that only promiscuous people are susceptible to STDs is how people get, well, STDs. Yikes. Testing beforehand is always a good idea, but it's no promise since most testsa are only for chlamydia, gonorrhea and sometimes syph.

C. did, as part of the K-1 application. I haven't been tested for AIDS, but my ob/gyn runs tests on the other major STDs as part of the yearly checkup.

Unprotected sex - unless you can get HPV through a condom?

I believe you can!

They are now vaccinating young women with some sort of new vaccine...I see it on the tv all time....

but the song is annoying 'one less...one less....o-n-e-l-e-ss...one less!'

LOL I love those commercials. You can get HPV of any type through a condom... that's why it's so prevalent. Makes me think "hmm I don't even want to know"

Can men get it too? If there are no symptoms, should we even care?

Yes you should care since it's the leading cause of Cervical Cancer

What is the association between HPV infection and cancer?

HPVs are now recognized as the major cause of cervical cancer. In 2006, an estimated 10,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with this type of cancer and nearly 4,000 will die from it. Cervical cancer strikes nearly half a million women each year worldwide, claiming a quarter of a million lives. Studies also suggest that HPVs may play a role in cancers of the #######, vulva, #######, and some cancers of the oropharynx (the middle part of the throat that includes the soft palate, the base of the tongue, and the tonsils) (1). Data from several studies also suggest that infection with HPV is a risk factor for penile cancer (cancer of the #######).

I am definitely having my daughters vaccinated. I mean even if they save themselves for marriage and only have that one partner who's to say their husband did the same?

Plus, you can get genital warts from HPV, and that's as a man. I think the body clears out most types of HPV on its own, but I'm not sure if the kind that causes the warts is a kind the body clears out and I'm too lady to google it. :P Other STDs you can get using a condom include crabs and herpes.

I don't think HPV goes through the condom, per se, but it's that the virus lives on the skin so mere contact is enough. Most of the time the virus doesn't do anything. Guys can get warts, and women can develop cervical cancer (there's many strains of the virus, though, and only a handful are linked to cancer.)

Plus, you know. ####### cancer.
