Someone mentioned blood donations...I completely forgot that they screened those for HIV. Durrrrrr, Friday brain! So I suppose in a way, yes...I have had HIV tests, though I've never gone specifically for one.

Yeah, if you give blood in the UK and they find something when they screen your blood, they will write to you and tell you to go for testing.

Same in the US; the US blood supply has been screened for HIV for about 20 years now. I had a blood transfusion in 1976 as an infant and never was tested until I donated blood. I did get one of those little postcards telling me to phone the blood bank because they found 'something' in my blood, but it turned out to be the Epstein-Barr virus. Well, DUH...I'd had mononucleosis the year before.

I'm just glad I've never needed a blood transfusion in the UK; apparently vCJD can be transmitted that way.  Won't it be great when they figure out a way to screen blood for THAT...then my husband can donate blood in America.

I was worried that I had hearing-aids because I had phone sex before. I mean, I wore a condom on my ear but those aren't 100% safe.

I think that you will find that you won't be able to donate blood in the US...just because you have been living here in the UK.

My fiance was just tested in February as a standard precautionary thing before his heart operation. He was negative for HIV. I will be tested next week as well, for my surgery.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has imposed a ban on blood donations from anyone who has spent more than six months in Britain from 1980 to 1997 because of the possible risk of transmitting the human form of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, known as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).

'Fraid not. I didn't visit the UK for the first time until late 1997 and I did not relocate here until 2001, so I'm kosher. My husband can't donate blood, but according to FDA regulations, I am allowed to.
