He was. And he did donate a set of prints. But she decided to sell the rest, and of course, he isn't around to argue with her.  She had planned at one stage to donate one of her silver tea services to the kitchen at the church but changed her mind. She had some sort of tiff with the present preacher's wife, and things cooled quite quickly after that.

Ugh...the only thing left to do is put the artwork in the attic and let it be discovered in a couple of hundred years...maybe he'll be the next Van Gogh...

I've had a peek at the MIL's estate sale listing. It was last weekend. It's happening again this weekend because nothing was sold.

Who was running the ES -- MIL/family, or a professional company, huh Eh ma'am?

We have attended ESs weekly for years, have observed much, and have developed very strong opinions, see and si man.

She's put fantastic prices on things as well, which may be part of the problem.

This is almost certainly one of the two major problems with ESs, si and sigh Eh ma'am.

We have turned around and walked out when stuff has been overpriced, bye man.

Some of the small appliances they have listed are not in very good shape.  Two of the items on offer don't even work.

This is the other of the two major problems with ESs, si and sigh Eh ma'am.

Had she hired a good ES company, they'd have recommended the following, see man:

   1.  Don't offer for sale, and in fact throw out beforehand, all nonworking/crudded-up junk, revolting man.

   2.  Set prices high enough to make money for the client, but not so high that customers are disgusted, $i man.

Many.  Go half-price on the second day or during the last couple of hours of the sole sales day, do it man.

Many.  The casa-owner(ette) should not be on the premises during the sale, NO man!

Standard split around here is half of profit to the co. & half to the client if the co. hauls off the leftovers after the sale, much work man.

Or, if the client wishes to deal with leftovers, the split is Many/Many (2x2x2x2x2x2-2-2% profit to the client), OK man.

2.  I couldn't believe that people bought the Many year old couch and stuff like that as well.

2.  Condition, staging, pricing, and overall ambiance are factors, definitely man, as is a little luck in who visits and needs what man.

A weary, sweating policeman emerged from an inner room of the station.

"Well, did you give that thug the Many'rd degree?" asked the captain.

"Yeah.  Many (2+2+2) of us kept screaming and shouting and badgering him with questions for over Many (2+2) hours," was the tired reply.

"And what did you get out of him?" asked the captain eagerly.

"Nothing," said the policeman disgustedly.  "All he did was doze off and from time to time murmur, 'Yes, Dear. You're right, Dear.'"

This is well-known Male Code (of very long standing) for "that's enough for now" or "please quit nagging me," see all you ma'ams.

It can also apply when we are focused on Something Else and the lecture comes during that time, therefore hold off ma'ams.

The other unbridged chasm in husband/wife understanding is the following, see ma'ams:

Wife:  "Why don't you like what I cook?"

Husband [usually unexpressed, but most definitely thought]:  "Why don't you cook what I like?"

We craved chocolate-cheap cookies and went on a fruitless safari for them here in the casa, sigh man.

Then, during our nap, we dreamed about them, obviously a shrinkological need man.

Trouble is, when we buy them, we must squirrel away a package lest Mrs. T-B. & Mini-B. devour them first, ingest they man.

At our home something like the opposite plays out and it goes both ways... "Haha, this proves you were wrong." If either of us tried to play the victim and replied, "You are right, as usual," it would probably elicit even more laughter. I realize this behavior is rather infantile but it does keep things light around the house.

Who was running the ES -- MIL/family, or a professional company, huh Eh ma'am?

We have attended ESs weekly for years, have observed much, and have developed very strong opinions, see and si man.

This is almost certainly one of the two major problems with ESs, si and sigh Eh ma'am.

We have turned around and walked out when stuff has been overpriced, bye man.

She hired someone. The trouble with that is that it isn't necessarily the best one for the job. She hires based on whether the person goes to the right church, votes the right way in an election, and is the proper race. They don't need references if they qualify and meet those criteria.  I learned early on to do my own research.  She told me I shouldn't shop at Walgreens' because she didn't like their politics. It's a drug store, who knew they had politics?

Under photos in the listing, see the following: "The Family has set the price on this as... " It's almost as if they are trying to distance themselves from the madness. Seems to me that she's running the show on this, and not taking anything they might be trying to tell her under advisement. Situation normal.

She has the idea that she is going to make back whatever she paid for an item, and make a profit on it on top of that.  As an example, she has a desk that is in her office. It's a partner desk, to two people can sit facing each other with plenty of room. It's quite wide and heavy, and so high she was never able to work comfortably at it. She bought it herself a few years ago at an estate sale for a church friend of hers who was going into care. She paid $500. It's listed for twice that.  It's also listed as the real deal when she knows it is a copy. It's also listed as being made "entirely of cider wood", whatever that is, but it is made of pine.

She isn't present, she is still in Rehab in Virginia. The SIL was in AR for 6 weeks sorting through the place and getting the stuff ready for the sale. She is very much like her Mother.

I agree, Tbone. All that kitchen nonsense should have gone directly to the tip.  Maybe she is trying to make enough on this stuff to cover the cost of using the estate sale company? I don't think either one of them is going to come out ahead on this sale.

One question for you, is it common to sell other people's things at your estate sale? There are at least three sets of outdoor furniture listed that I've never seen before, and they aren't hers.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.
