The sun has gone into hiding :(

I have booked my anniversary present from last year (day at the spa) for this year's anniversary 😂

I have an interview this afternoon, I am hoping they like me as I am going slowly insane being home with just the animals and MIL for company.

We had agreed before I came out that I didn't need to work but financial consideration isn't everything, I miss going to work, having people other than family to talk to and something other than the house work to do :(

Go get a soccer ball as an anniversary present, paint a face on it with your blood and call him "Wilson", there's your companion. Duh!...

I've had a peek at the MIL's estate sale listing. It was last weekend. It's happening again this weekend because nothing was sold. Not even his artwork, which she was sure would go for a fortune. He was a Chaplin in the Navy and a preacher in later life, and everything he did had a religious theme.  I suppose woodblock prints of the seven deadly sins wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea :P

She's put fantastic prices on things as well, which may be part of the problem. The other problem I think, as that people these days don't want that old stuff.

I gave her, as a gag gift, a coffee cup with a lid meant to keep your cuppa warm, that has a rabbit head on top of the cover for the cup. It's listed in the antique china photo. I bought the thing at Dollar General three years ago, for $3.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Yeah, selling old stuff ain't easy. A guy in my office had to get rid of a lot of stuff as he downsized to a smaller house. Some things, like a king size bed, he couldn't even give away. I bought a bunch of great framed art pieces - some original, some prints - for around $20. He was of a mind to get any price for any thing. I briefly considered the bed, which he wanted $50 at the time, but it would have swamped our bedroom. He came back and offered it for free but in the end neither me nor anyone else wanted it.

What's the plan for stuff that doesn't sell?

We ended up selling a ton at my father's estate sale, including a lot of artwork.

I couldn't believe that people bought the 40 year old couch and stuff like that as well.

I don't know that there is a plan. She used to volunteer at the church thrift store, and I thought that is where a lot of it would end up. Some of the small appliances they have listed are not in very good shape.  Two of the items on offer don't even work.

What doesn't sell will probably, in the end, be taken to the thrift shop. The house has got to be empty before the realtor will photograph it.  Then it has to sell, and there are plenty on offer around her, that have been on the market for ages.

Somebody has to have a long chat with her. She's not going to get anything like she thinks for any of it. The misconception may be due to the previous auction she has had when she moved from CT to AR, but she used to own a lot of really fine antiques. Some of it may be down to her worsening dementia.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Didn't help that her daughter knicked the good stuff.

For sure. The daughter is in the middle of pulling down her lake house. So she can build a new and improved and bigger lake house on the same spot. Got to fill those rooms with something:)

I had an email from the woman who lives next door. She was trying to work out what was going on. She said a huge Mayflower truck was in the drive a couple of weeks ago and wanted to know if the MIL had changed her mind and was just moving house, maybe just into town?

I do hope the SIL has the good sense to keep that dreadful portrait of her mother. It's life-size and unfortunately very like her in her haughty expression, but in it, she is dressed for some fancy ball or other. She is wearing 1920's art deco diamonds and emeralds set in platinum, worth a cool half million. Would be nice for her to have the provenance.

Was he affiliated with a church? For his art work....maybe give it as a donation? (Just an option...for tax purposes)

He was. And he did donate a set of prints. But she decided to sell the rest, and of course, he isn't around to argue with her.  She had planned at one stage to donate one of her silver tea services to the kitchen at the church but changed her mind. She had some sort of tiff with the present preacher's wife, and things cooled quite quickly after that.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.
