We & Mrs. T-B. decided to let Mini-B. sign up for reeding/riting at Kumon, si wee man.

He was getting rather bored with the Advanced P-Math (which he will also continue, ejmuhcayted wee man).

Mini-B. returned from Kumon so exited that he finished his entire first reeding/riting book in one sitting, motivated wee man.

Simple stuff so far, but he has a smart brain, cheap off old block man.

Stepdaughter turns 18 in a few weeks, on her 18th birthday she gets an insurance settlement currently held for her by the courts as well as inheritance funds.

MIL is fully aware of both the amount and when it becomes available to stepdaughter.

MILis suddenly all over stepdaughter like a bad rash, cooking her favorite foods, taking her out, telling her how pretty she is and so on and trying to get stepdaughter to move into her house.

MIL wants a new car and we are fairly confident this is closely linked to her new desire to be close to her granddaughter.

MIL is not aware that court papers have already been signed giving stepdaughters other grandmother control of ALL her money.

I could feel sorry for her but im mostly disgusted that she's willing to use her granddaughter in this way (she's already asking to borrow money from her and we've already warned her to not have any cash on her when she's with her granny)

Sigh :(

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey

That is really sad. I'm glad the other Grandma has control set up.

My cousins had something similar happen to most of their inheritance. Their Aunt who their mother thought she could trust as she didn't need money, had a good job and nice house ect. Took 3/4 of the money to redo her house buy new cars and go on trips.

Something about money makes families crazy. Your MIL is going to be crazy mad when she finds out all her cozying up isn't going to get her a car. Or anything else.  Neatly done, having other Granny already set up and in place with control.

A friend of mine from years ago had an elderly and very wealthy grandmother. That grandmother also had two sets of children having been married twice. Talk about war. The day she died, they tried to get into her house and help themselves, but the Sherrif had been there first, and the doors were sealed. Grandmama may have been old, but she was as smart as a whip. The will then went through the courts in an orderly fashion. The plants in the house died, the things if the fridge went off, the dust mounted, but everyone got just what she intended.

My MIL can certainly be described as wealthy. And crazy. Her initial idea was that once the house sells, she was going to divide the money up from the sale between my husband and his charming sister.  A couple of hours later she is on the phone to her new retirement complex (which she has yet to set foot in, still being in rehab) saying that if the house sells fairly quickly, she wants a bigger room and could they do that for her.

My charming SIL has been stuck in AR for 6 weeks, having had to drive her Mother to Virginia and fly back to close the house up. She left Saturday to drive her Mother's car up there. I wish she had just sold it, no way should the MIL be on the road, but never mind.  The house is still not on the market because the agent wanted it to be empty before they list it. The Estate sale has been put off until next week.

I would have thought any estate agent worth his salt, would have peppered their website with the listing for this sale, with all the antiques and interesting things she has littered about the house. Instead, there are photos of small appliances, and from experience, I can tell you none of them are in very good shape, coffee makers, three of which I know don't work at all, the sort of kitchen rubble you find at yard sales.  The only furniture listed is the dining room suite, and that doesn't belong to the MIL, but to her daughter. In fact, the house looked pretty bare, my Husband thinks his siter has yanked the bits she wants and they are on their way to her house via movers. The photos of the sunroom show wicker furniture and tables, just not ones I have ever seen before. How odd, someone else's furniture in her estate sale.  The "Art" sale was yesterday, but none of it sold.  Her Husband was an artiste, doncha know.  They had fabulous prices on the paintings, but having dusted them for years, I can't say they'd be to everyone's taste, certainly not mine.

I know exactly what comes to my husband..zip.  Not only will his sister inherit the lot, she is also Executrix. That happens to suit us both, we don't want anything from her.  If we've done it right, we won't be in the will at all by now.

I've had half a dozen messages from the SIL on FaceBook...'how do I friend you?' You don't, you silly cow, you are already ON my friend's list. You're just tucked up into a safe little corner where you can't see anything.  But I can see you.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

And it isn't as sweet as she'd thought. She's pretty angry at the moment. The dog she left my MIL to watch, which is what she was doing when she fell and broke her hip for the second time, has died.  They don't have any children, just 'fur babies', and this one was their last. And she has been telling people it is her damn Mother's fault.

I can't agree with that. The MIL should never have been left on her own, and certainly not to babysit the dog while they were away.  She let the dog out and forgot her. When dinner time rolled around hours later, and the dog wasn't panting at her feet, she realized she hadn't seen it for a while. That is why she was out wandering in the snow, wearing jeans and tee shirt and trainers without socks. That's her daughter and son in laws doing.

But as you say, I'm not in charge of this circus these days.

My real circus is many miles away. My best friend and former flatmate is 82. She has end-stage polyarthritis, a dicky ticker, osteoporosis among others.  2 years ago she fell and broke her femur, her humerus, her shoulder. They were only able to repair the hip. She's been back home for 18 months with assistance twice a day. I call her once a week, more lately. In the last 2 weeks, she has had 4 falls, fortunately not breaking any bones. She's refused to go to the hospital, she's insisting on anything that needs to be done happening at home. Her Doctor has left a letter for Ambulance staff stating not to transport her without calling him, 24/7.  Her dog will go to her friend who runs a boarding facility and has taken him in for months while she's been in the hospital.  She says everything else is ready for when she 'gets off the bus'.  She can't get to her computer for she is now stuck in bed. Her tablet will no longer work either. Her cellphone cannot keep a charge.  She is totally out of touch, and rather isoltated, other than the person that turns up twice a day to help her.  She told me she has a good stockpile of morphine at the ready. I know that one day, and soon, that I am going to ring her up and there will be nobody there.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

That's sad but good all wrapped together, sad that she's alone and relying on strangers for basic care but good that she's prepared and able to make the choice we make for our pets - to go when the time is right.

My heart goes out to you, it has to be awful never knowing if today is that day ((hug))

It's a damning indictment of society today that so many are left in similar position :(

Your SIL deserves no sympathy, when it comes to her and her husband it's like watching karma in action
