Conditional Residency - Temporarily out of Country

My husband has conditional residency based on our marriage. It expired in October, and he has a one year extension letter. We were out of country for three months because I was working as a volunteer at a start up college. At reentry, the agent suggested getting a travel permit if we plan on being gone like that again. My understanding was that was only necessary for absences of a year or more. Does anyone know differently?

Travel over 1 year has a presumption of abandoning residence, but an officer can determine that residence was abandoned for shorter trips (or multiple trips with little time in the US), and refer the case to an immigration judge.

A single trip of only 3 months is unusual to raise concerns of abandoning residence, though. How much total time is being spent within / outside the US?

Working outside the US may raise concerns of establishing residence elsewhere. Again, just 3 months doesn't usually draw much attention, but if it's persistent then it may make them wonder where you actually live.
