New Career

I'm starting a new career as a CDL A truck driver. I'm not sure if I should get a local job or one where I am gone away from home a lot of the time. If there are RFE's needed once my application is submitted, I can get family to submit these for me if I'm not around during my home time. Can someone give me advice about whether working over the road driving all over America is wise since I am applying or should I get a local position? I'm not sure all that is entailed in this complete process so I'm wondering input from others before I make a total commitment to employment.

Thanks.

You will need some kind of access to your mail during the process. Perhaps more important is whether you will be an employee or self employed.  If you are self employed for 2018, you will have zero current income (for the purpose of qualifying as sponsor) until you have filed a tax return in early 2019.  If you are an employee receiving W2 income instead of an independent contractor receiving 1099 revenue, no problems.

What they said. You can set up informed delivery for free on the usps website to see what is going to your mailbox daily, but if an RFE needs your signature it gets difficult if you're out on the road. And as a courier classified as an independent contractor, I gotta warn you, if they classify you as an independent contractor, even once you do start filling taxes for this job, it may bite you in the butt. Because I file my own taxes, and I use my own vehicle, even though I earned more than enough to meet and exceed the financial requirements, once I take my deductions, I don't anymore. When I file taxes, I'm going to have to forego deductions and pay quite a bit more out than usual in taxes to make sure that bottom line on my return satisfies whoever is looking at it at the embassy. Just my two cents as an independent contractor. Hopefully you get a w-2 instead of a 1099 lol. Good luck!
