Extension letters and stamps? What is that nonsense?

Anyways, my dad is doing a 10 year GC renewal and at the biometrics they put a cool sticker on the back of the GC that automatically extends the status by a year.. I was pretty surprised to see that.

I know that. So why can't they put the damn sticker on the GC as they do on the I-90 renewals?

The process is different, but the renewal is the same.. Well, kind of.. The extension letter works the same as the sticker on the GC, but the sticker sounds a lot more convenient than the letter or a stamp, IMO.

No it doesnt work the same.  ROC is different than a renewal.

OP unfortunately it really is not a concern of the USCIS that you chose to travel at this time.  I would not have chosen to travel 1 year after my green card expires knowing the letter also would expire.  I did not get a stamp but obviously my ROC only took 6 months.  All these people saying "we pay for a service" no you are not.  You are paying to request a privilege be extended because you can provide evidence that you have entered into a marriage in good faith.

They do not look at your extension letter date, they look at your gc date.  We were denied a stamp because she said our year extension from gc date had not ended.

It's ridiculous they won't give you the letter.

However, y iu are at the mercy of uscis. Try another office of you can. If not, go back a few days before you fly..if they won't give u an extension then u can't fly.

Nobody gets another letter . If original one is expired and your I-751 is still pending, I-551 stamp  can be requested (in your valid passport or, in some cases, in the I-94).

What is the difference between the extension letter and the stamp?

I am talking about the GC renewal, and not the ROC which is different, but the LPR card renewal is exactly the same.

When you apply for ROC or GC Renewal, you will get the Notice of Action, which serves as an Extension Letter as the green card (either temporary or 10 year GC) may expire while the ROC or GC renewal is in process.

If the ROC or GC renewal has not been approved (i.e. new green card not received yet) AND the extension letter is about to expire, then you can get a stamp on your passport.

For practical matters there is absolutely no difference between expired green car+letter and Passport with I-551 stamp.

This is the roc forum the topic is about an I-551 stamp when the extension letter for roc is about to expire, 1 year after the green card expires. Some offices will not do a stamp until the letter expires.
