Hello,

If I go with Co-Sponsor, can I still include household members i-864a income with the application, or should I only include mine and Co-Sponsor i-864 form?  As of now, we as a household, we can't reach the minimum required for sponsoring someone, we're about $10k short. However, my Co-Sponsors income is way above the requirements $75k Plus.

I've already prepared my i-864, and my household members i-864a forms. But it turns out we're $10k short.

Should I go with Co-Sponsor only or include i-864a household forms as well with the Co-Sponsor's i-864, will it strengthen the package?

Thanks,

Dean.

Do a new I-864 that does not count your household members and their income.  Don't include household members in the new form unless they are your dependents.  Use no I-864a forms.  Then your "Joint Sponsor" provides an I-864, required financial documentation and evidence they are a US Citizen or Green Card holder.

Thanks for reply. So just go with the co-sponsor and file i-864?

There is no "cosponsor".  Go with a Joint Sponsor.  Do ALL of what I wrote, literally, without editorial or interpretation.

Actually I think you can have two co-sponsors.

No, you cannot have two joint sponsors and you will not have ANY cosponsors.  "Cosponsor" is an incorrect term in this context.  That's why I have corrected you now three times.

Co sponsor = joint sponsor,  just different way of saying it. Understand?

I understand that cosponsor is an incorrect term, never seen in any I-864 instructions.  On VJ we commonly use cosponsor in the context of the I-134 affidavit of support used in K1 visa cases.  You are being corrected for a reason, mainly for the benefit of other readers.

There are no co sponsors. The USCIS term is joint sponsor and we should use the correct terms as this decreases confusion.

Household

There must be one joint sponsor who meets the financial requirements.

Correct but just to clarify, the one and only joint sponsor CAN use income from household members to qualify.  It is also best practice for a married joint sponsor filing joint tax return with their spouse, to provide an I-864a from their spouse, even if their spouse has no income or the spouses income is not needed to qualify.

Yes I understand this.. i was keeping it simpler and addressing the co  / joint issue   . 😎

It was your last sentence that needed clarification.  The "one joint sponsor" can use income from a household member to qualify, AND if they are married filing joint tax returns, adding an I-864 from the spouse is best practice.  The OP's misunderstandings come from not actually reading and following the I-864 instructions and from trying to oversimplify the most complicated form used in the process.

You gotta be careful with a joint sponsor from a household with multiple people who are dependent on that income as well. Because the amount will change. That joint sponsor needs to not only be 125% above poverty level, but check the list for number of dependents PLUS the new immigrant.

Correct except it is not 125% "above" the poverty level.  It is above 125% OF the poverty level.  For a family of 2, 125% above the poverty level would be $36,540 not the correct $20,300.  Words mean things.  We can't telling people to interpret literally, and they use the wrong words.  Another common mistake is to use 2 times more (meaning three times as much) when we should say two times as much, which is one time more.  Retailers intentionally do this frequently.
