Scientists predict 'mini ice age' could hit UK by 2030

A mini ice age that would freeze major rivers could hit Britain in less than two decades, according to research from universities in the UK and Russia.

A mathematical model of the Sun's magnetic activity suggests temperatures could start dropping here from 2021, with the potential for winter skating on the River Thames by 2030.

A team led by maths professor Valentina Zharkova at Northumbria University built on work from Moscow to predict the movements of two magnetic waves produced by the Sun.

It predicts rapidly decreasing magnetic waves for three solar cycles beginning in 2021 and lasting 33 years.

I propose we haul all the water that is currently flooding Miami over to the UK, let it solidify, then ship it to the polar cap.  Global warming solved right here on CEHST.  It’s a Christmas miracle, I tell ya!

33 years is nothing. That shouldn't even classify as a "Mini" Ice Age. I guess Europe already had a "Little" Ice Age, so they figure they might as well.

 

Skating on the Thames sounds fun though. It's been awhile.

Where does the article claim this is due to man made global warming? If anything the scientist argues the opposite. This is actually a good thing because it may counteract any impact we may be having on our climate until solar activity picks up again in 2050.

The direct impact temperature has on the human body is only one issue when considering fluctuations or larger scale changes in the Earth's temperature. I wouldn't even say it is the primary worry. No one thinks that because the earth is going to get a few degrees warmer that humans are suddenly going to explode. Its the impact that shifting our overall temperature has on the environment and the ecosystem. That, in turn, can have downstream impacts on the human population (food shortages etc...). Though i'm sure a lot of that would happen with a longer term ice age as well.

I think she was suggesting that one thing may be causing an "overall warming" of our planet (pollution), while the other (The Sun's magnetic waves) may cause an "overall cooling" of the planet over the next 30 years. So they may "cancel" each other during those 30 years. If the magnetic forces of the Sun are expected to produce a warming again after those 30 years, then both processes will be pointing in the same direction.

 

Think of them like vectors. Two going in opposite directions may produce a net zero. Once they are both pointing in the same direction, they may add together.

Solar power converts light into electricity. I don't think the Sun's magnetic activity is going to mean that it is going to be a "Dark Age" (less light) in the next 30 years. Maybe it would impact concentrated solar power, but I'm not sure.
