If some cancels something online with me, I get a notification, customer gets a notification.

Hit print and there it is.

So why not in this case?

Well apparently United has their end of the "cancellation" notification. At least they claim to. They shared it with news outlets, but news outlets haven't publicly shown it.

If the lady really did cancel then she either didn't get the notification (spam folder? or some error), or she did but she is intentionally not showing it. She has shown her app which doesn't list the cancellation, but United has responded to say that the app wouldn't because she ended up taking the flight. That seems a little strange to me (if it truly was cancelled, wouldn't they have had to essentially rebook her onto the flight? Not sure if they can reverse the cancellation), but ultimately I have no idea how the United system works and it would just be an assumption to say that it isn't true. Unless someone who has cancelled a flight, but then ended up taking the flight in the end, comes forward to show that their app still showed it as cancelled.

United could be lying, or the woman could be lying and denying she cancelled the flight and then changed her mind. United has shown physical evidence that it was cancelled, so if they are lying it means they manipulated whatever image they provided to media to make it say cancelled when in fact that wasn't true. They've stated that what they provided even shows it was cancelled on the app.

I don't know why media outlets haven't provided those images.

My assumption is that it does not exist, so we are left with some glitch in their system, possible or somebody fiddled it because of the issues with Queenie.

My money is on the later.

What doesn't exist? The images?

The original article posted here reads:

"The airline provided the Chronicle with another screenshot of its internal software and said it showed the flight had been canceled on the mobile app, but that was not verified by the publication."

So they definitely exist. In the Houston Chronicle article they say:

"The official provided another screenshot of United's internal software system and said that it showed the flight had been cancelled on a mobile app, though a reporter was unable to independently verify that on Saturday because of the system's coding."

Which makes it sound like the image was in a format that the reporter couldn't open perhaps? Seems like a silly excuse to not be able to access the information.

I wouldn't question whether or not the screenshot exists, I would question whether it is real or "fake" (physically altered by United, or just created falsely by United, in order to support their claim). I think going to such lengths (creating false material to support their claim) is quite an agregious action on United's part and would show true intent to deceive (instead of just be "misleading" or something to avoid the PR hassle). If the images are real, then either a glitch occurred, or a United staffer can "cancel" the flight on the "mobile app" without the customer knowing about it (which seems like a strange system to have in place).

I have never cancelled a United flight, I have rearranged one and received confirmation emails.

So why not here?

What do you mean? Why didn't she receive an email?

She very well may have, but after changing her mind and trying to board her original flight (perhaps her alternative flight plan fell through....she didn't book the flight until she cancelled her United flight, and then the flight she was going to book was suddenly full), she has left that part out of her story.

We only have what the woman is willing to provide to media. Just like we only have what United is willing to provide. While United doesn't have the best reputation regarding customer service, I wouldn't automatically believe they are lying. They have tried to provide evidence to show the flight was cancelled, I would prefer to investigate that. Not sure why people seem to be ignoring it.

All they have to do is print off the confirmation that they sent her, or just email it the Drive Bys.

Not that hard.

Unless they had bought space on Hillary’s email server...

Good point

Did not think of that...
