One part I don't quite get from the original article:

A United spokesperson told Fox News the screenshot didn't show the December flight as canceled because Simon ultimately took the flight. The airline provided the Chronicle with another screenshot of its internal software and said it showed the flight had been canceled on the mobile app, but that was not verified by the publication.

"Not verified by the publication" meaning what? How else would Fox verify an image sent by United of their internal software?

Having just dealt with a return flight home during the holidays where my flight was delayed several hours, I was looking at other flights to get my wife and I home. Depending on how she booked her ticket, she may have been able to get a refund on the return flight, and she could have been looking to fly earlier on another airline. Not saying that happened, but that seems to be United's story.

So are we just saying United doctored a photo of their internal software? That would be extremely shady (but I guess not that far off for United).

United was probably caught between a rock and a hard place.  With congresswoman SJL showing up and them knowing her tendency to play the race card at the drop of a hat, they probably bumped the woman.  Either way they get bad press, but now the SJL racism accusation is directed toward the woman that was bumped and not United.  It was rather convenient that the person sitting in 1A was the one that “accidentally” canceled her seat.

So you do not think somebody on a cross country trip home would have cancelled the second leg of their flight?

I don't think they claimed she accidentally.

I don't think it is THAT unusual. As I said, my wife and I ultimately did just that 2 weeks ago on a "cross country trip home". Our flight was significantly delayed, we were going to miss the onward connecting flight, so we cancelled and booked on a different airline.

That being said, we checked the cancellation policy first, then booked the other airline, and then cancelled our ticket. We wouldn't have cancelled our tickets if we weren't confident we were getting on the other flight. So I don't quite understand why she would have cancelled and then changed her mind.

Per the article United offered data from their internal software. I find it strange that they just discounted that because it "couldn't be verified". Who else would verify it other than United? I wouldn't automatically assume they would go to the length of literally doctoring a screenshot in order to lie about what happened. I don't particularly like them, but that I think misrepresenting a situation to lessen PR is a different level of deceit from actually physically altering images in order to prove your point.

Sheila Lee - Rep. from Houston area

Houston - United's 2nd largest hub

No one in the world could make be believe Rep. Lee does not have any contact from the United's Houston office. It's gotta be someone with access doing her a favor. They looked at the list, everyone else except for the lady paid for the ticket, but the lady used her freq flyer miles. Cheapest solution to the airline was to bump her to premium economy and give her seat to the rep.

PS: Fly jetblue people. They may skid off the runway but free wifi, live tv, and most legroom in economy.

'I'm a queen and I demand to be treated like a queen!' How Congresswoman involved in race row on plane was chauffeured a block to Congress and was nearly banished from an airline before

  • Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Texas Democrat, has a storied history of bad behavior on planes and in automobiles
  • Previous news reports have captured Jackson Lee berating flight attendants over not getting a seafood meal in first class
  • As well as making her Congressional aides, she sometimes referred to as 'you stupid motherf***er,' drive her one block to work
  • This week the congresswoman suggested a white woman was being a racist when the woman complained after United gave Jackson Lee her first class seat
  • The airline has stated that the woman had canceled this leg of her flight, which was how the congresswoman was able to be upgraded to the passenger's seat

Actually United is claiming the flight could have been canceled by the woman accidentally.  I wonder if United can make something look accidental in their system.

The official said their internal coding reflects the flight was canceled roughly a half-hour before the original take-off time, after it was clear the flight would be delayed over an hour. The congresswoman was then tapped for the seat because she was at the top of the upgrade list thanks to her global services status, the official said.

Though Simon adamantly denies she canceled her flight, the official said it’s possible this could have been done accidentally.

While racism isn't something to be taken lightly, I would be more concerned with intentionally doctoring images and blatantly lying about internal ticketing information.

They provided screenshots to news outlets that apparently show she cancelled her flight (though no news outlets have shared those with the public). If those images are fakes I think that is a pretty big deal. Saying something that isn't quite true is one thing, physically creating false information to support your claim is much worse.
