Check this out and advice/input.

My now wife has been her on her K1 for two months - and we’ve done everything as we intended to.

We first got her social security card with maiden name when she arrived. No issue. We got married after she was here one month.

We then got her new social security card with MY last name (new name). Except when it arrived, they misspelled her first name. Logically, we went back to the office and said “hey you guys made a typo, we just need this fixed”. This time, however, the woman sent her request for a card to New York for like a proof of eligibility (despite having her arrival paperwork/unexpired Visa right with us). It said it could take 4 weeks to process..

We still have a month before her Visa expires and of course we’re working on our adjustment of status now. However, that really frustrated us because I planned/was excited to have her on my health insurance - and that can’t happen without her social.

If I read correct, a social security card isn’t a “must have” to file the AOS right? I think I’ve seen other people say they weren’t able to get their new social (with name change) until the showed EAD docs etc. Please help!

I do feel like it’s a case of our Social office not knowing about K1’s... they literally gave us our card after marriage, and they went the other route just to fix a typo they made???

**Post moved from K1 to AOS from family visas. Question is about that process.

No, SSN is not required for AOS. If she has it  if not, it' not a problem.

No, it isn't needed for AOS. And you should be able to add her to your health insurance since she does have a SSN now. I don't recall ever having to show my ss card (or wife's) when signing up for health insurance, just had to provide the SSN...
