Absolutely.

I was quite happy with how long I managed to use my Nexus 5. In that same amount of time I know people who went through 3 or 4. I would have kept it longer but my wife kept hounding me. With a charger at my work computer and in my car I could keep using it even though the battery died after 6 hours.

It made me feel less guilty spending the money on the Pixel 2 since ive gone so long without an update.

How long have you had the Pixel, and what are your thoughts on it?

I had it preordered so whenever it came out (end of October I think?).

I'm very happy with it. I don't demand that much of my phones (I'm not a mobile gamer or anything) but it's nice. The size is just right for me (I have the "smaller" one), the fingerprint sensor on the back was the first one I've had on a phone and it works well. Some of the auto "smart" features on the google assistant are nice. After about a week it "learned" where home was and asked if I wanted it to be permanently unlocked when at home, I said yes. It also remembers certain wifi networks and even if I have my wifi off (to save battery life), it will automatically turn it back on when I come in contact with specific networks (like my home network), and then when I leave those networks it will turn it back off (so it isn't even searching). I also like the "always on" display where I can see the time just by glancing at my phone without actually turning it on. It shows the time, date, any calendar events I have for today and my notifications "always on" the screen.

My wife is more of the camera phone user and she is stealing it constantly, mostly for the unlimited cloud storage. Her iphone is always full (it got to the point last week where she couldnt' even receive emails anymore). We both think the images are better than her iphone (7, so not the newest). I've seen various comparisons to 8/X but I haven't actually compared them myself. The "digital" portrait mode works very well and makes really nice photos. The editor in the base photo app is also nice.

I haven't had any bugs, crashes or anything with it. I've had a couple of times where the finger print sensor didn't want to register me (after several times). I think once my finger had just been wet so it wasn't picking it up. I don't have any of the ghosting or screen issues, but I believe those are just with the larger one.

Oh the other "negative" (not really but it's a feature that doesn't work that well) is the "What's playing" feature on the "always on" display. It only works around half the time. I can't tell if it is trying to figure the song out and can't, or if it just isn't listening. It always seems like when I am curious what song is playing it isn't working (it just displays nothing like there is no music), and when I already know the song it will tell me the name and musician. I definitely didn't buy it for that feature and think it's mostly a gimmick so I don't really mind.

EDIT:

I should also add that using it as a phone (texting, light surfing, email checking), the battery lasts about 2 days which is a vast improvement from my Nexus and the major reason I upgraded. my battery had degraded to the point where it was near dead after rounds (3-4 hours).

I am looking at a review of it now and overall it looks nice. I will definitely look into it thank you.

I get home from work tonight. Mrs Nature Boy is under a throw and doing whatever it is she does on her old iPhone 6s plus. I watch for about 20 mins and inquire why. She says her passwords and what so ever are already saved in the old iPhone, but adds she likes the camera better on the new one. I am a victim of marketing

Nougat released in August 2016...that is pretty safely in the "2016" window. Samsung getting it that late is Samsung's problem, not Google or Android.

I would separate "updates" that add no major features but instead patch/fix things from the larger core content updates.

Having fewer small patches isn't necessary a bad thing. If they mostly fix problems, it may be a reflection of having less problems to begin with.

Yep, most of those IOS updates have been to fix major issues, many of which were caused by releasing the previous update too fast. I'm never in a rush to update IOS. One of my pet peeves is how they continually download the updates while your phone is charging and really push you to update. If you delete it, it will download the update again the next time you are charging and have wifi connected.

If I can find my old charger I'll boot up my Nexus 5 and see if it can get the Oreo update. It's a 4 year old phone.

I don't think the age of the phones is the issue. I think it's entirely the manufacturer wanting to shorten the lifespan of each phone model.

The Nexus 5 will not get the release as far as I can tell. The 5X will. You can still flash the Nexus 5 manually if you want to try that. I have my Nexus 5 sitting around somewhere, so I may do that if I have some time. I liked the Nexus 5 but I never actually used it much. I could never get coverage with it where I worked.

My biggest reason for switching to Android was the update approach that Apple takes with updates. You can flash the Nexus 5 with a custom version of Oreo tomorrow if you want. If you don't like it you can go back to whatever runs best for you. You could flash the original version of 4.4. You could flash a stripped down version of 7 designed with overall speed and responsiveness in mind. So many options if that's what you need. Impossible to do that with IOS.
