The Google phone always gets the updates first and will get newer versions of Android which other manufacturers will choose not to make available.

I've also heard people complain that Samsung doesn't push out updates as long as some other android device manufacturers.

I found my 1st generation iPad when we moved earlier this year. It had been in the garage for 3 years at least, probably frozen each winter, 100 degrees in summer, and it was covered in tools and boxes and other junk. I charged it up and it still worked, running IOS 5.1. Seemed to work OK but in the end I decided to toss it out on garbage day. I've had one smart phone start on fire already, so I didn't want to keep a device that's had the battery frozen multiple times in the house. Still, pretty impressive engineering that it lasted so long under those conditions. I've had smart phones that died just sitting on my desk.

You defenitly don't want to take any risk with that. And I don't think it can take any updates. Atleast I believe the one I had couldn't keep up.

The first generation was much stronger. The one I have now is in a case and no one is allowed to touch it

Verizon has great coverage and the Motorola Droid is basically their "brand' phone.

I love my Droid.

Yeah... my hatred for Verizon prevents me from the phone I know I'd love... :P

If you're lucky, you'll get one new version of Android with Samsung. If you want the latest and most frequent updates, buy the Google phone.

Unlike IOS, new versions of AOS do not happen with near the frequency.  So there may be only one or two new versions of the OS in a 2-year period.

There is a new version of Android every year just as there is with iOS. And there are minor updates to both during the course of the year. With Apple or Google, you will get these updates as soon as they are available which is not the case with Samsung or any of the other manufacturers who use Android.

Oreo is Dec 2017.  Don't have it yet, dunno if they will push it via Verizon.

And IOS has way more updates than once per year.  I've had at least 7 in 2017 alone.

What are you talking about, new versions of the operating system or updates to the current yearly version of each? You said new versions of Android don't happen as frequently as they do with iOS which isn't the case. Each operating system has updates to its yearly version. With Apple and Google, you get the updates as soon as they are available.

You most likely need to migrate to a new device to take advantage of the new version. This is distinct from the security and performance updates that get pushed over the wire.

If you have the Google phone you will get the updates pushed to your device, ditto for Apple, and not the case for any other manufacturer. I guess I'm not understanding why getting bug fixes, security patches, etc via updates is a bad thing and that it's better not to get them.

You been getting that because Apple left a couple of pretty big security holes, introduced a soft brick bug, a battery drain issue, a messed up calculator and broken email apps. Many of the updates were just to fix these issues. Google also releases bug fixes and security patches for Android, they just usually do it with less fanfare. New versions have been historically every one to two years.

One of my first Android phones was a Samsung which essentially took the Android OS and "modified it" to make it their own. In the end what that meant was the phone had extra software I could never delete (Samsung's own apps), and it got updates months later. Also when the phone model got old it was clear Samsung stopped supporting it, so I could never get updates.

I've used a "Direct from Google" phone ever since, so I don't know if Samsung is still like that. I had a Nexus 5 when it came out and I only just replaced it in October (3 or 4 years?). I continued to get every Android update as they were released, despite my phone being old. Pretty much my only issues with it were the battery life was getting short (understandable at that age) and the camera was old.

I got the Pixel 2 (the smaller one, I hate giant phones) in October and I've been happy with it. My wife has an iphone and she steals my phone to take photos because the camera is better (or at least just as good...debateable) and it has unlimited cloud storage without having to pay for it....we have over 1,000 photos of our dog now... She's already said when she is ready to have upgrade she will switch.

My Pixel 2 has Oreo, currently version 8.1.0 (not sure if there was a version before that, it was last updated December 5th).

I'm on T-mobile btw, but I don't think updates have anything to do with your provider, and more to do with the manufacturer. At least that's what I always thought?

I thought it was both. Google provides the update, then it goes to the manufacturer and then it must get carrier approval. That's a big part of why there are no timely updates other than with the Google phone. And again, Google is pure Android with no manufacturer skin. Samsung had TouchWiz which is currently called Samsung Experience. TouchWiz was bloat city, not sure about the new version.

I was talking about phone service provider. IDWAF mentioned Verizon. I don't think T-mobile, AT&T, Verizon etc... makes a difference. I realize manufacturer does.

The google phones also have manufacturers. They aren't made by Google. The manufacturers just have a deal with Google and make the phones run "plain jane" android experiences, unlike Samsung etc...

Are there no other phone manufacturers that make phones that use barebones android, other than the "Official" Google ones? (Nexus, Pixel)? If there was - I wonder if they would qualify for updates as soon as they were prepared or if Google prioritizes its "Google phones" over other vanilla android phones (if they exist).

I've never seen the point of the additional stuff. That's why I never bought a Samsung again. Android provides what is needed (at least for me).

EDIT:

I will say the only thing I've generally liked more on Apple is Facetime. I haven't found a corresponding software that is quite as easy to use and works as well. I'm sure part of it is skewed just because it is easy to use an app that the people you are calling have, and it seems like most of the people we speak to have an apple device. Skype just never had the same AV quality. I've tried Facebook's video chat and it is also quite poor. Android has its own chat software but you need to convince the person you want to talk to to download which is hard. I do wish there was a "Facetime for Android".

I have a Moto on Republic not very much bloat.

I was messing around with my Vizio Smart TV and could not delete Yahoo? Yahoo, really?

I was thinking of getting an Amazon discounted one with their bloat, not that much, or a Pixel but mega bucks.
