Hi,

My wife got her I-797C receipt for I-485, I-765, I-131 and was also given an Alien Number, A###-###-###

A couple days after the receipt, we received another letter for an appointment for Biometrics which is Jan 3, 2018.

AS off right now, we would like to know if anybody has tried opening a bank account, credit card or driver's license using only Alien Number, foreign passport foreign, driver's license, etc.

We are in Delaware state. Please let us know before we even going to DMV or any bank.

Thank you.

Have you applied for an SSN #. This is what you will need for all to the above (bank, DMV etc)

Bring your birth certificate and visa along with you for everything. Aswell as your i797 to the DMV -with your ssn# than you should be able to get a license or state id card

Banks need Ssn, visa and I would even bring your marriage certificate and anything else you can think of to make the process easier.

Credit cards(still need ssn) are another story the visa holder has no credit ..you can try to apply still ..might get denied. There are also cards you can obtain where you put a deposit on the account and that will be your balance.(they hold the funds for a year or so) once you prove you're good with your credit card they release the funds and your credit will be that amount you started with.

But without an SSN you sign a form stating you are a non-resident alien.  I forget what it is.

Only the USCIS, DHS, and DoS use your A#.   Nothing else needs it.

You don’t need a SSN for a bank account, though some banks might insist. I bank with Bank of America (opened the account in New Jersey) and they were quite happy to just use my passport.

I also opened an account with "first American bank" however it caused some major system issues later on and the account had to be reinstated after I received my ssn. They had a stipulation that you must have a Ssn # in system before 30 days otherwise the account gets closed. Everywhere is different so you never know!
