Were the minimum wage increases also pre-negotiated?

Whelp.....

As far as I'm aware with regards to ATT yes - wage increase was just going to some of their employees, but yes that was negotiated as part of the union as well. The agreement was signed a few days ago, but they had been in talks since at least Spring. The bonus agreement was due to direct talks between the head of the CWA and the ATT CEO - he argued for the bonuses to be delivered for Xmas, if the bill went through, otherwise the bonuses would still happen, just somewhat later in the deal. Some of the bonus is a retroactive agreement - in essence giving them back wages in a lump sum. https://www.cwa-union.org/news/releases/cwa-represented-workers-att-get-1000-bonus-if-you-dont-ask-for-your-fair-share-youll You can see this reflected also on the ATT's press release page.

“By pushing employers for this raise, CWA proves that working people have power when we join together to negotiate for a fair return for the work we do,” the union said in a statement. “Unions remain the most effective means for working people to stand together and achieve wage growth and keep good jobs in the U.S.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/12/20/att-says-gop-tax-bill-will-mean-1000-bonuses-for-200000-employees/

also... there's always a fine print..

The bonuses also come as a number of Internet providers, including Comcast and DirecTV, the television provider owned by AT&T, announced price hikes for their broadband and cable TV packages that are expected to start next year.

I would also point out that Comcast let go a large group of workers in two states 11 days before Xmas... they are also due to hike their rates considerably. http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Comcast-Hikes-Prices-Increases-Sneaky-Fees-for-2018-140907?mc_cid=d762674d2e&mc_eid=bf11efc24c

Huge profits + free small amounts of money to workers + tiny amount of investment + trickling down to consumer price hikes = nothing is ever free and the company isn't doing this out of the kindness of their heart or because they feel especially charitable right now because we're all going to be paying for it anyway!

In business, perception is everything: A single bad experience can burn a brand name and ruin a company's reputation.

So it's no surprise that well-known tech companies including Comcast, Facebook, Dish, Sprint, and Charter Communications landed on a list of America's most hated businesses.

Financial news site 24/7 Wall St. this week releaseda report identifying "12 companies hated by customers, employees, and the general public." Their findings are based on consumer satisfaction surveys and worker reviews.

Comcast topped the list, boasting a "significantly worse" score than the Internet and subscription TV service industry averages, according to 24/7 Wall St. In J.D. Power's rating of major wireline services, the firm received the worst scores in cost to consumer, performance, billing, and reliability.

Clients are understandably perturbed: The Federal Communications Commission in the fall fined Comcast for $2.3 million over allegations the cable company charged customers for services they never authorized.

Smart.

Good PR move as well as tax move (tax benefit of 35% instead of 21%).

Nevertheless good for the employees.
