I assume there is no reason to issue the 18 months extension to anyone who already received the 12 month extension? I would think if/when your 12 months extension expires, then they will issue you another extension if need be (and oh dear lord do I hope not to see this happen.)

I believe the announcement said that they would re-issue 18 months letters to those already having applications pending, so we should get them. My guess would be that they work back from the most recent as they know they'll need them. i.e. they'll send them to May filers, then April, then March and then at some point they'll hit a month where the applications are being decided upon.

We also read that in the announcement as well. Please find that affirmation in the link posted here.

"......will receive a Form I-797 receipt notice that can be presented with their Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card, as evidence of continued status for 18 months past the expiration date on their Permanent Resident Card"

does this mean that we need to get the I-551 stamp even if we get the 18 month extension?

No. You do not need stamp if you have valid extension letter. It seems some september 2017 folks are getting traction on their applications. Hopefully this year end, we may start seeing progress on our cases.

Thanks for replying.

Any idea how many months in advance do we start trying to get an info pass appointment for I-551 stamp. My immigration lawyer says one month before the expiration of extension is good enough.

I would suggest check your local office. My local office has no appointments at any given time. Good luck with yours.

There is no consensus on this - USCIS only opens appointments about 2 weeks in advance. Trying to book earlier is futile.

Most people do get their stamp about 1 month prior to the expriation of the green card. Some people have gotten them 3 months out. A lot of people were sent away for coming to early.

What is this I-551 stamp that people mention here? I renewed my GC in January 2018 and got the 12-month extension letter; do I need this additional stamp?

Also, what happens if we don't get our new GC by the end of our 12-month extension? Will we receive that new 18-month extension letter automatically or do we have to apply to something else?

It's taking me more time to get a renewed Green Card than the original one, which took only four months when I applied two years ago. This is crazy...

12.03.2015 - Sent AOS package to USCIS Chicago

12.06.2015 - Package delivered

12.14.2015 - Text received from USCIS; case received

12.17.2015 - NOAs received on my birthday! :)

01.07.2016 - Appointment for biometrics

01.11.2016 - Form I-485 ready to be scheduled for interview

02.17.2016 - EAD/AP approved

02.24.2016 - EAD/AP arrived today

03.18.2016 - Notice for interview scheduled April 20, 2016

04.20.2016 - Green Card Interview

04.26.2016 - Green Card received

End of this journey!

01.2018 - Sent I-751 - 10-year Green Card package

04.25.2019 - I-751 approved

stamp would be required if you want to travel outside of the US after your GC expires. current wait time is around 18 month

Before your 1- year extension letter date expires, you would need to log onto this website

https://my.uscis.gov/en/appointment/new?appointment[international]=false

and schedule an infopass appointment to your Local office to get an I-551 stamp in your foreign passport, to maintain your legal presence in the U.S.

Because a 1-year extension of your temporary greencard is proving to be 'not enough time' because of the growing backlog of cases, USCIS is currently sending out replacement letters with an 18-month extension. Look for one in your mailbox sometime in the next few months.

Infopass can only be scheduled out to two weeks, that is to say from the date you attempt to schedule one and two weeks forward. They stay booked almost 100% all of the time, and you have to be lucky (when you log on and attempt to schedule) to find a recently cancelled appointment opening. They seem to be filled within minutes of someone cancelling. So, actually achieving an appointment can require you logging on daily, and even multiple times daily, to attempt to schedule your infopass appointment. When you plug in your zip code, you will almost always see a message that "There are no appointments available'. Over and over again, day after day. The current suggestions from people who have actually achieved their Infopass, is to begin your many-times-daily attempts at least 30-days before your extension date expires. Generally, your local office will not issue your I-551 stamp earlier than 30 days before your expiration date, and it can take up to 30-days to 'get lucky' and score an infopass appointment.

My suggestion, when the time comes, take the first appointment that shows to be available. If you wait a few minutes to check your calendar and/or schedule, that appointment availability will be occupied by someone else.
