Why are you getting the marriage recognized? Is that necessary for anything? Apologize if that is too intrusive a question, I was just wondering...

Is anyone else planning to file for their N-400 in January?

If yes, should the pending ROC be mentioned in the cover letter along with its receipt number or something? Would be good to hear from some folks who have already gone through this (filing N-400 with ROC pending)...

If you're filing online, there's no cover letter and from what I remember, no space to provide any additional information from what they require from you, so there's not even a chance for you to mention your pending ROC.

It's not necessary as such (a friend of mine who has been here for 20 years never did it), but I thought it would be useful if we ever lived in Germany or even for inheritance and such. It's VERY bureaucratic - we had to bring affidavits that we were single at the time we got married in the US. Seriously! And they don't recognize my husbands birth certificate. Hm, too bad, it's the only one he has. But it seemed better to do this now than years down the road in case some German bureaucrat says "Yeah, you were married in the US, but we're not sure if that counts. It's not in the books here." And then you start scrambling under time pressure maybe.

I filled for my 10-year GC in January, a little late, and my window for N-400 opened Nov-18. I did everything online, submitted the documents they requested on the instructions (nothing more). Scans of GC, marriage license, my husband's birth certificate, last 3 years of tax return, and additional evidence (mortgage, car insurance on both our names, joint bank account, and that was it).
I submitted my application online on Nov-18, received NOA for biometrics on Nov-21 I think, and did my biometrics today, Dec-12. Chicago office.

Hello carvalho, thanks for sharing your experience.  Were you able to "verify your identity" online before filing N-400?  If so where did you find your "DOS Case ID"?  I couldn't get any number to work in this field.

I was able to verify my identity without a DOS Case ID. Only people who have visas have a DOS case ID. I'm pretty sure there was an option for you to say you don't have a DOS Case ID.

DOS Case ID is asked here:  MyUSCIS --> My Account (top right corner) --> Verify your identity

Would you mind sharing where the option to state we do not have DOS Case ID is?  On the "Verify your identity" page, both A-number and DOS Case ID are mandatory.  Thanks

Have you guys signed up for this website( DHS )to follow your ROC application before?

I signed up and have my case in there. When I first trying to start N400 application, the website just directed me to sign in. I did and it went straight to N400 app. I didnt have to find the DOS ID or seeing the page like previous comment.

Hey - to clarify I was able to sign in and start application or track cases.  I am just worried that without completing this identity verification step, N400 application submitted online would be delayed or denied.

Hmm, from what I've read so far, you have to upload scans of several documents in the online application. Couldn't you also upload a scan of the cover letter? Or are the documents very specific.

Haven't started the online application myself, so maybe I'm missing some part of the interface – maybe there are very specific sections for each upload or something?

That's true, you upload scans of the documents they require. There's a space for you to upload marriage license, tax returns from last 3 years, copy of green card and if I'm not mistaken, your spouse's birth certificate. And then another space for you to upload "additional evidence" (they list examples of additional evidence). I guess you could upload a cover letter there. I didn't because for me it would be kind of out of place (since it is not additional evidence), and I never sent a cover letter with any of my applications.

I'm sorry I can't help you more, I just don't remember verifying my account. It's all fine though. The application was accepted and biometrics are already done, so I don't think you need to worry.

Got it, thank you!
