Hello guys,

Did anyone travel oustide the US with only I-551 stamp on passport as a proof of legal residency?

USCIS took my expired extension letter and GC from me when I went to get my passport stamped for another 6 months.

Thank you

I have travelled on two different occasions with an expired green card and the stamp on my passport to Nigeria and I had no problem at all, to and fro.

Thats good news. USCIS took my expired green card and the extension letter from me

During my time they didn't take my expired green card from me. I guess things have changed. This was in 2012 and 2014. The immigration officers just glanced at my expired green card and checked the stamp on my passport and that was it. They didn't even look at the extension letter. So you shouldn't have a problem at all.

I traveled back from the UK on December 5th with just the I-551 stamp.  I still had my expired green card and extension letter, but wasn't asked for either - the officer just verified my stamp by checking it against the system.  Was done and out in under 10 minutes...actually faster than when I used the expired green card with extension letter on my previous trip.

You will most likely be taken to the secondary screening so they can double check everything.

We had a hard time getting out of Costa Rica with just the stamp. They wanted my wife to go to the Embassy and get a letter from the Embassy.

My wife then took over negotiations and they let her leave, but the mad, frustrated Gringo the answer was go to the Embassy when it opens.

Wondering what you experienced? I am about to travel to CR in 2 weeks and have my passport stamped with 551 and have an expired GC.
