Hi everyone,

My wife had her Citizenship interview last week. It went pretty good the IO was pretty nice, he was pretty young maybe around 23 years old. She brought in a lot of documents tax return forms for the past 5 years proof of address, letters from friends and family, travel information, and all the usual ID and the required documents they want you to bring in. He didn't ask to see any supplemental documents.  She past the civics and history test with flying colors. The application questions went well he didn't question her answers he did have her file its pretty big as we always have sent in a lot of supporting documentation, he said he wasn't going to open it at that time. She doesn't have any criminal history, she has only been out of the country for  2 weeks at a time. And only 3 time in the past 7 years.  He had her sign her pictures and the document and gave her a pamphlet with instructions for getting her passport when she gets citizenship. All seemed good he told her that her application seemed good to him, but he just needed someone to look at his work. She asked how long it would take and he said there is an Oath ceremony in January and one in February. It could take 1-3 months.  The thing that we are worried about is he checked the B. box decision cannot be made at this time. The box is checked she passed the history and English test and the B. box decision cannot be made at this time. We didn't know that this could happen and are pretty disappointed and worried. It appeared that the interview went good and we have heard that junior IOs cant approve the interview without a supervisors approval is this true? what do you think please help. It has only been a week no changes to her status online still says scheduled for interview.

Thanks for your advise and help!

It's normal to get that response even after a successful interview.  In many cases, an application has to be looked over by a supervisor first before approval or denial (ie. criminal history, or especially if the IO is new as you assumed)...as you mentioned above, even the IO told you someone would need to check over his work first.

I had a less than stellar background when I went for my interview, and the IO told me the same thing because of my criminal history---fortunately, she agreed to have her supervisor look it over right away when I gently pressed her to ask him to approve it while I waited in the office.

Hopefully you hear something soon, but as you mentioned above keep in mind that the IO told you it may take 1-3 months before you are scheduled for the oath ceremony---I know waiting is hard especially when you've come this far!  You're almost at the end :)

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

Hi there,

Yes my wife did get her Oath Ceremony scheduled and a date, the date of the Oath Ceremony is next Thursday February 22nd. It took about 2 months from interview to receiving the letter. Her status changed online appropriately through the whole process. so If you haven't already create an account on the USCIS website do so, you can check your case status and you can choose to get update emails and text messages.

She called USCIS once after the interview to talk to a service officer he just said that she was in normal processing time and her case was still being processed. They didn't ask for any further information, and even though she got the decision cannot be made at this time. It was pretty normal waiting period and it didn't seem to make the process take longer. It did add some extra stress though.

With all that being said  It does seem pretty normal to get decision cannot be made at this time. Try to be positive and know that decision cannot be made at this time is pretty normal, and keep busy. I know this can be a little nerve racking. But as Going Through said to me ( I know waiting is hard especially when you've come this far!  You're almost at the end :)) That helped me. My wife did get he Oath Ceremony date in a timely manner. Best of luck and let me know when you get the good news.
