How hard is it to be approved if you get married on a tourist visa?

He can not enter the US on a visitor visa with the intent to marry you and remain in the US.  He must return to his country after marrying you to wait for the CR-1 visa to be approved.

Registered Nurse- Retired- I practiced in the areas of Labor & Delivery, Home Health, Adolescent Psych, & Adult Psych.

IT Professional- Retired- Web Site Design, Hardware Maintenance, Compound Pharmacy Software Trainer, On-site go live support, Database Manager, App Designer.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

You can get married on a tourist visa fine, and then start the process for a CR-1 (spouse) visa. You cannot come to the US on a tourist visa to marry and stay.

ETA: ~12-14 months from filing to interview

 

Option 2 is to go for a K-1 (fiance) visa. Entering on this visa lets  you marry and stay to adjust status.

ETA: ~7-9 months from filing to interview

 

The CR-1 is considerably cheaper overall and quicker to get the actual green card. It also lets you work and travel abroad right away. A K-1 visa requires marrying within 90 days then going through AOS after entry. Roughly 4 months after filing for AOS (+ AP & EAD) you will get the EAD (work authorization) and AP (allowing you to travel abroad and return).
