this situation was not handled well by the police on the scene.  they had plenty of time and opportunity to take him into

custody without all of the cross you legs crawl towards me etc nonsense.

It depends on the department. Some LE academies are up to a year long.

You lack credibility if you are talking about police brutality and then post a link showing the total number of police shootings without extrapolating the percent that were considered justifiable - which is the vast majority of them.  Justified police shootings are not police brutality unless you believe police shouldn't have the right and ability to defend themselves and others.

i'm not really concerned if you question my "credibility" considering the miserable sidestep you just made. depends on the department? well then, if psychological testing is up to the department - that's a big problem.

yeah yeah, the us has oh so many 'justifiable' police shootings compared to others, americans are just that bad.

Miserable side step I just made?  You aren't making any sense.  There isn't one standard for every department.  That is the reality of police training.

You seem really bitter when you talk about police officers.

behave badly? like, "you need a time out" behave badly?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/national/police-shootings-2017/

Over 1,000,000 sworn officers in the US, making an average of 21 arrests per year.  937 people killed.  That's what... .0041% arrests resulting in death.   Pretty low number, if I do say so.

Meanwhile, police officer deaths on duty are up over 20%.

that's some pretty off the wall math right there.

there's a reason the circumstances surrounding each death are also tracked.

I am going to have to have a think about that.

67 police officer deaths (out of 1,000,000)  makes it a rate of .0067%.

Isn't that a "pretty low number", by your own standards?

Apologies - the 67 was for half the year. I can't seem to find a final tally for 2017 so I don't know if that 20% increase remained steady.

In 2016 143 officers were killed making it 0.0143%

Still pretty close to the "pretty low number" threshold you set.

Also with such low numbers keep in mind 20% may not be statistically significant and the increase this year may have been due to chance.

So how many of the police shootings you posted were justified and how many were unjustified?  Add some context to your stats or your stats don't have credibility.  Unless, you just don't care and are so anti-cop that you think all of them were unjustified shootings.

Well look at that -

The most recent 2017 estimate (up to December) puts the number at 122.

That is down 13% from last year.

www.nleomf.org

Easy now.  That is 122 families who are affected by their loved ones being murdered on the job.  If 122 doctors were being murdered every year, you wouldn't be so callously dismissing the stats.  We should have zero police officers murdered every year.  I'll let you walk this one back, because I don't think you really meant to be so dismissive of police officers being murdered.

Remember, the vast majority of people shot police put themselves in those circumstances by committing violent crimes, which include assaulting the officers.  These officers want to go home to their families every night, just like you do.  Think about how you would react if every patient you had in your office had the potential to murder you.  Pretty stressful to say the least.

The person I was quoted was being dismissive of people shot and killed by police (many of which were unnecessarily killed) by giving a percent rate that is very small. In his own words it was a "pretty low number". I was merely showing that the other number is also a "pretty low number" by the same standards.

He stated the rate was so low it wasn't a big deal. I was using his standards and applying it to the number of cops killed.

Of course I think BOTH numbers are bad. I just wouldn't focus on one and ignore the other.

I was also correcting him with updated information. He seemed to imply that police officer deaths are rising, but that is not the case with the most up to date numbers. That doesn't mean it isn't a problem, just that it isn't getting worse.
