Hi

I have a pending I-751 application. I have done my biometrics. I am moving and usually I would just notify them of my new address. My husband and I will be staying with his parents temporary until we can move into our new place. So my question is, do I have to change and update my address to their address where we will probably only be staying for about 3 weeks. Or do I leave it at my current address and update it when we have moved to our new address? It just seems like a lot of work to do just for somewhere I will be only staying for a few weeks. Feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

You can fill out the change of address online.  It is not much work at all.

I don't recommend doing it online. I did a year ago and a few days ago I got a letter from USCIS requesting that I file a change of address with them because they still have my old address.

Just a small  remark - a US spouse, as a sponsor, has to file a change of address as well, submitting form I-865 via regular mail.

I have changed addresses before in the past online and no issues.

the spouse (sponsor) will need to file i-865 but he has 30 days to do so. So he could wait until you move to your permanent place. My husband got a confirmation for his i-865 within a week. I changed mine online via AR-11 and am still waiting for a confirmation (don't know even if I should be expecting one).

it's not about having issues or not.. It's about following the Instruction.

"If at any time in the past you completed Form I-864, Affidavit of Support, to sponsor an immigrant, you are required to report your change of address within 30 days of the change if the sponsorship agreement is still in force. The sponsorship agreement remains in force until the sponsored immigrant:

1. Becomes a U.S. citizen;

2. Receives credit for 40 quarters of work;

3. Departs the United States permanently and either formally abandons lawful permanent resident status (by filing Form I-407, Record of Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status) or is formally held in a removal proceeding to have abandoned that status;

4. In a removal proceeding, loses the lawful permanent resident status that the sponsored immigrant obtained based on your Form I-864; or

5. Dies.

NOTE: Each sponsor must submit a separate Form I-865 to report an address change, even if sponsors share the same address"

thanks. I did get the online confirmation, but haven't seen anything in the mailbox. It's been more than 6 weeks... I don't have an active petition right now so not sure if that makes a difference. I'll be sending my i-751 docs in July and if need be, I could always add the printout to prove I did change my address.

Ok I am not understanding this I-865? So you are saying my husband needs to fill this out but it doesn't need to be done until 30 days after moving? So right now all I need to do is file the AR-11 online for my change of address for right now?

I'm not sure I would file a "3 weeks change of address"... If it was for a longer time, than yes, would definitely do that.  But in your circumstances  i would probably wait till moving to your new permanent place.  But a choice is yours :)

The only thing -  I would notify my local Post Office about this short address change . Just to be safe. There is some paperwork needs to be done with them and in this case if something arrives at your old address, it will be directed by Post Office to your new address. The same thing I would advice to do AFTER moving to your new permanent place.

This is just from our experience - despite the fact we filed ALL required "address change" forms and got ALL confirmations, USCIS still kept sending their Notices and even my EAD to our old address.. Everything finally found me, but just because we filed that paperwork with our Post Office. And there are a lot of VJ folks, who have experienced the same "trouble" after moving to a new place.

There is always a "human factor" ;), so things like that can happen to anyone at any time...even if before everything went smooth...

Since your are at the ROC stage, I believe you got your conditional green card through marriage, right?.. There is no timeline, so it's hard to tell what visa you adjusted from ;)But anyway, your husband had to file Form I-864, Affidavit of Support, for you to be able to get your 2 years green card. So, he is a Sponsor and must submit change of address along with an immigrant he sponsored. You :)

Here is the I-865, Sponsor's Notice of Change of Address Instruction.

Good luck!!

I have made an address change online as well, and it didn't work for me either. I got the confirmation and all, but every single letter/package from USCIS was still sent to my old address. Even to this day, a year later, letters are still sent to my old address.

Exactly the same thing!!!!! although my status on the USCIS website was up-dated to "change of address received" , up to a year they were sending everything to our previous address! ..
