Questions to those who already had an interview at Newark in the last few months

a. When the officer asks about things pertaining to the 'last 5 years' - do they refer to the last 5 years since submitting the application or do they mean from the date of the interview ? I ask this given that for many of us the interviews are happening almost 2 years since applying -and a lot of things change

b. When asking for evidence, do we  hand it over to them or display it through the glass separator ( if there is even one due to Covid)

Thanks in advance

a.  Our N400 was based on 3 year rule but if asked, I would interpret it as 5 years from date of interview.

b.  There is a glass separator with a space underneath to hand documents over

Good luck with your interview!

Hi Newark folks. We will have interview next month, just some questions for those that have done this at Newark:

1) Appointment is at 7AM, are oath ceremonies scheduled at specific times or just when enough people?

2) Is cell phone use allowed in the waiting area?

3) Spouse must wait outside the building, is that correct? Can't wait in waiting area?

1. I do not know the answer to this but our interview was at 9:30 AM and while waiting, there were Oath ceremonies throughout the morning/day

2. Not for calls/speaking....if you have to make a call, you have to step out of waiting area

3. Do you also have a pending i-751 (removal of conditions)?  If so (as we did), we had to convince the security guard that the spouse needed to be there for the -751 portion to also be interviewed and they allowed us both in.  If it is just N400 (and not I-751/N400 combo), then yes, spouse has to wait.

Good luck with the interview!

I-130 (for parents of US Citizens):

8/19/2022: NOA (IOE0917XXXXXX); Texas Service Center

7/22/2023: Both (parents) petitions approved

7/27/2023: Both cases sent to NVC

8/8/2023: Received NVC welcome email for both parents

Well it's happened. My wife had her interview and oath ceremony in the same day today. Interview was scheduled for 9am and she was called in at 11am for the interview itself.

The interview itself only took 5-10 minutes. She was asked only for her passport, greencard, and drivers license. None of the rest of the documents were requested. She prepped enough apparently and aced her 6 interview questions. She was then asked if she has travel plans in the next month because if so, the oath ceremony would take place later as you surrender your green card at that time.

Then the real fun began as she had to wait 4 hours for a slot for an oath ceremony. Two of them took place while she was waiting but was told those were mainly filled by people who were called in specifically for an oath ceremony. Anyways, at around 3pm or so, she took her oath. quadruple checked her naturalization certificate, and wave a tiny American flag.

We just got back from picking up some apple pie and an ice cream sundae from McDonalds to celebrate all the best that America has to offer in the most American of ways. Good luck to all and thanks to VJ for being and guiding us through this journey! Next step is getting a US passport and renunciating prior citizenships... very much looking forward to ending the onslaught of paperwork once that's all over!

Congrats! We're there any specific questions asked ( outside of the civics questions and the yes /no questions..such as definitions , number of trips etc)?

The only other question she was what/when was her last international travel. My wife approximated this and was actually off by a month so at least her case officer wasn't looking for exactness in this answer.

Did you check the website? Or you are waiting for the mail?

You may see your interview date right now on the USCIS website. Go to the case, click "documents" and open "Interview Scheduled"

Hi, I had the interview today afternoon at Newark NJ. I had to wait for 1:30 hrs for the interview. But the was quick and it took only 20 minutes. I didn’t have oath ceremony today as the interview was over only after 3pm and officer told that I will get invitation later for oath. Anyone is waiting for oath from Newark? Or recently, anyone had oath ceremony separately?

Glad to see that some people in this office still works otherwise I thought this office is ghost land coz I've been waiting for more than a year to reschedule an interview which was cancelled initially.

Nothing other the civics/reading/writing and the yes/no one's and the traffic violations that I mentioned in my application. He wanted to ensure that I was not arrested or handcuffed for any reason.

I had my interview yesterday in Newark. The officer was very pleasant and the process was quick. Unfortunately, I could not do the same day oath because they did not have my full immigration file. I was told that they should receive it in the next two weeks or so and then I would get a letter to come back for the oath.

I also have to return for the oath because they did not have my full immigration file.
