Guys any idea when to  expect   Interview ?

I have been tracking cases at Newark from efile till interview date, average wait time currently is 246 days. Longest is 252 days shortest is 240 days.

Hey guys, I became a US Citizen today. Thank for you this thread and everyone for sharing their experiences to help me with this journey.

I teared a little when the supervisor gave a really touching speech about the immigration process and how this marks the final milestone.

My interview was today, 1/16 at 7AM at the Newark downtown USCIS building.

We arrived 6.45am, the doors were still locked and there was already a line formed.

It was freezing out btw, shortly after security staffs opened the doors a few minutes past 7.

Full on airport style TSA security check, so if you don't need to bring your laptops or big liquid bottles, save yourself the trouble.

15 minutes later, we arrived at the 15th floor, another guard checked out IDs both me and the husband.

To my amusement, there were already like 10 plus people before us waiting for their interview.

The clerk took my interview letter and reviewed my ID, and instructed me to sit until my name was called by the interviewer.

I was pretty nervous, still tried to cram in as much as I can from the booklet.

Another 20 mins in, my name was called along with another applicant, and I was greeted by a nice gentleman.

Very professional and polite, he started by making me swear in before I take my seat.

There was a brief moment of awkwardness when I told him that I was previously residing in New York, and only moved to Jersey a few months ago.

He seemed mildly agitated because he had to run through the file to do a write up as I was a transferred case.

Then went ahead to finger print me, take my picture and verify all my application details.

There were some discussion about me not willing to bear arms if the country needs me to, he suggested to change that, if not, it will complicate the process, and usually only Jehovah's Witness people with appropriate paperwork will get approved.

I reluctantly agreed, and he proceeded to the quiz. He asked 6 surefire and quick questions, and I answered them very quickly, and it was over before I knew it.

So there won't be 10 questions if you can successfully answer all 1st 6 questions correct.

I'm listing the Q&A below if this helps:

1) Which group of people were brought in the United States to be sold as Slaves

- African People

 2) Who is the current Vice President of The US.

- Mike Pence

3) What is the highest court in the US.

- Supreme Court

4) Reason the colonists came to America.

- Freedom and Economic Opportunity

5) How many Amendment are done to the Constitution?

- 27

6) During the Cold War, what was the US most afraid of?

- Communism

After the quiz, we proceed to the reading and writing portion. Fairly simple.

I read from an ipad, Who can vote? And I wrote on it, All citizens can vote.

Next, he went through the procedure of asking all the security related questions that you had already answered in the application (Are you criminal/terrorist/rapist etc)

Before I know it, I signed my application after verifying all my personal details were correct.

He took out a form, and told me I'll be scheduled for the Oath taking later in the day.

I was over the moon! He prides that only in the Jersey field office have such a benefit compared to the other states, so he highly encourage family or spouse to accompany applicants for their interview.

Overall, it was really pleasant and wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be.

I brought a boatload of documents, worried that they might want additional info/updates on the past year since the application date, he didn't ask for a single one.

My file was thick.. He said they have everything they needed. My advice though, is still to bring all your IDs, documents, it's better to come prepare since the wait is already so long.

I also tried to crack a few jokes here and there, and I think it ended on a really good page when he handed my notification on my pass and the oath document.

I shook his hand, went back out, waited for my name to be called by the clerk outside again.

The clerk took my green card, and also requested my expired green card, which I stupidly left out.

She reassured me its fine, and gave me a green envelope saying I can mail it in when I get home.

I verified my details on my naturalization cert, and told me to come back here after she confirmed my time for the ceremony at 9.30am.

We went to the cafeteria at the 2nd floor for some breakfast and coffee, didn't ate anything prior.

Promptly returned at 9.15am and at 9.30pm sharp, an announcement was made, we were whisked into a room with arranged chairs, a mini stage and theater.

The usual, the officer congratulated us, showed us a few introductory videos, and proceeded with the singing of the anthem, oath taking and pledge.

Watched a cringe worthy video of Trump welcoming us, the newly naturalized citizens. It was quite terrible, as you can clearly tell he was reading from a prompter without expression.
We ended the process by waving our mini flags to the song "Proud to be an American", and they called out our names to receive our certs.

After phototaking, the last step was applying for my passport.

Conveniently the packet includes the application form, and the post office is just across the street.

They gave us 3 options for delivery, standard - 4-6 weeks, rushed 2-3 weeks, and urgent priority which requires documentation for the urgency - 1 day overnight delivery.

I took the 2-3 weeks one, had to pay cash, it's surprising they don't take card.

It's hefy! $250 after taxes. It's probably also because I applied for the passport card at the same time.

Oh and be sure to ask the post office clerk to make a copy of your naturalized cert, they take your original for the passport application, and will only be mailed back to you separately when you receive your passport.

On and all, we are so thankful for all the people that helped us in this process, and hope our experience can help the next person with their journey as well.

Best of luck!
