Hi fellow Vj ers,

I came here on a K1 visa and am in the process for my permanent Green card (April 2017 filer). My window period for citizenship opens by April 2018. What are the pros and cons of applying for citizenship while the GC is still being processed?  Thank you all so much.

Are you talking about you're in the process of receiving your 2 year conditional green card or your 10 year green card?

Keep in mind that the adjudicator of I-751 is different than N-400, once they touched your i-751 and saw that you have filed for N-400, the adjudicator of your I-751 well forward your I-751 to your local USCIS so they can have it as combined application, this means, you will have a combined interview as well, I-751 and N-400. Check the processing time for N-400 on you local USCIS before filing it, just to be sure that your I-751 wont process longer.

In reality the processing of your I-751 will take longer since they will forward your I-751 to your local USCIS office if they saw that you filed N-400, meaning its a concurrent filing so they will process your i-751 and N-400 in one day with 2 separate interviews, one for i-751 and one for N-400.

 

N-400 is being processed by your local USCIS, for example if you live in New York, the local USCIS of New York will process your N-400.

Thank you,but I am still confused. Once you file for N400, wouldn't that take precedence over I-1751?Also if they do a single interview for both processes, wouldn't that save more time? Thank you.

They wont precedence your i-751 because I assumed your goal would be to be a US citizen right? then they will now focus on your N-400 while your i-751 is also part of it.

I dont think there is an advantage about it but more on disadvantage, because the agony of waiting to adjudicate your application would prolong specially if you're aiming for citizenship.

I will only file my citizenship once I got the approval of my I-751 because the processing of N-400 on my area takes longer too. so if I will do the concurrent filing then I will prolong the agony of waiting for the approval of my i-751 and N-400

This is a common myth on VJ. plesse take look for timelines of May, June, July, August fillers who has 751 n 400 combined. Also check proceeding time for n 400 at your local office

I have the opposite opinion.  We will file N-400 as soon as eligible, regardless if the I-751 has not been approved yet.  If you plan on applying for citizenship then what is the agony of waiting for an approved I-751.  It's only a green card for you to use until such time as you get citizenship.

Exactly my thought. I wish there was a confirmed recommendation on what order to proceed further. Any one else could kindly chip in with suggestions as well? Thank you everyone for your response so far.
