FIRST JOB

Got a job :dance::dance: went for the first interview last week and was asked back for the second yesterday with the Vice President and was phoned today to say they would like to offer me the job.. I really am very pleased about it. The pay is not as much as I was on back in the UK but I have benefits included which is essential as we all know ,the position is not at the level of the one in the UK but it is a start and they seem great people and the job sounds interesting.

However!!!!!! I have an interview, finally, with the bank that my daughter works for but it is not for another two weeks ;) , I am going to go because at the end of the day if I am successful with that one the pay will be twice as much and the benefits are the best in the business. I would feel terrible about giving my notice in to this one but I have to think of myself and Alan on this one. If I am not successful with the bank then I will be more than happy to stay where I am, does that sound terrible?????

What I really cannot believe, despite having applied for about 10 jobs, this is the first one to have invited me for an interview and I got it, so in a way I really am pleased with myself!!!!

congrats!! Regarding the 2nd interview, one has to look out for numero uno!!! Congrtas!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Congratulations! I would not be thinking about the bank job, in spite of the better pay and benefits - tell them you've already accepted a position with another company. At the end of day, if you can afford to work at the place that offered you the job, then go for it and stay with it unless at some point the job isn't working out. It says a lot to have the VP call you and personally offer you the job. :star:

I disagree. Everyone is job hunting all the time. Most of the time it is less intense but everyone should always be looking out for better opportunities. Your employer most certainly does and won't give a ####### how it affects you or you feel about it.

That said, CONGRATS on the job and good luck with the interview at the bank!

A couple of weeks is not going to make or break the 1st company.. If the 2nd job comes through, any employer is going to understand 2x's the pay.. It's a no brainer. Especially when you know the climate of the 2nd company from your daughter and obviously you have decided it's a place you would like to work. I would do the same thing.

If the 1st employer wants to keep you - they'll find the money or re-offer.

Wow Congratulations Val I am so glad that everything is falling into place for you two.

See if you can get your interview sooner at the Bank that way maybe you can stall the company that has offered on a start date until you know what the bank are going to do. If not then take the first job and leave if necessary, but take the most that is offered as you need it here.

Good luck whatever you decide.

thanks all

there is no way that I will not go for the second interview, as you say at the end of the day, you need as much in terms of benefits and pay as you can get, and although it would make me feel a bit rotten to let the other company down when they are so nice, as ETUS says, any employer will not think twice about you if push comes to shove.

Congratulations on the job  Don't feel guilty about resigning if the other job comes through! Most businesses are not people oriented like they were 30 years ago and wouldn't have a second thought in dropping you!
