I don't know about Tunisia but they asked in japan (I'm a Turkish citizen) and they were asking in Turkey for tourist-work visa.

If they don't give it back (some countries just keep them) the embassy would know or she can ask to the embassy what else she can provide.

you can maybe get the information on the number of if she goes to wherever they issue passport in Tunisia (in my case it was an embassy here in japan or a police station in Turkey

PS_it is not usually just for background checks but it is a prove of countries she's been before with the old number and also to check the old passport still in the hands of the owner not in a black market somewhere. That is why they also ask if you ever lost a passport. Because this can mean identity theft and affect the original owners entry as an additional check may be required

And that's what worries me, what if she can't get a copy of it or something? The police forces there are way less than helpful...

I would first check if Tunisia gives back the old passports normally.

if as a general rule they don't, then call the us embassy in Tunisia.

There are people who's getting visas everyday. And it is asked in every type of visa if it is asked for k1. I'm sure they had this situation before.

so don't panic make the calls and let's see what we can do. For the embassy call religiously and also mail them. Hey should have this you have to pay 2-3 dollars to make a request type of mails too. And they will have to answer I believe in 3-5 business days to those.

She told me it's standard for them to keep passports and ID cards there. I'll email the embassy then! What about the pay 2-3 dollars thing though ?

You are worried about nothing.  Even yourself said the passport was never used.  There is no need for them to verify travel outside tunisia during the time she held the passport because she didn't

YMMV

In japan at least they wouldn't let me send them an email without lying a fee....I paid for with the credit card.

i really don't think this will be a big problem, but definitely check to be sure.

How do they know that though without verifying her passport? For all they know she went to Syria and is trying to hide it (ofc she didn't lol)

At our embassy interview they required it. But if it is customary to take it back in your fiance's country, I would think they already know that, right?

That's my assumption too. Just don't want to run into any unexpected problems.

some countries do want to see the old passport pages (in our type of country / high fraud / muslime)

they want to check to make sure the beneficary has not traveled to a terrorist area for training and yes, we have see as in one case a woman can also be a terrorists

if she does not have (or taken photos) of these pages before turning in the old one,  she could go into AP for a background check

I was surprised when i renewed mine here in US that the new passport had a diffenent number / if that is the case in Tunisia a computer check of her new passport is not enough

Just a suggestion but to anyone getting ready to renew,  take photo copies of all your pages to prove where you have been

i did  receive my old one a few weeks after the new one (US passport) but it could have also been lost in the mail so don't trust that either

mine was proof of my 5 visits before to Morocco before getting our visa

Old passport will only be required if you have a valid US visa sticker on it. It will have to be cancelled when the CO issues you the new visa. If no previous US visa/s, then no need to show old passports.
