Hi All.

Me and my wife got married on Dec 18 2015. last month (Nov 2017), She finally came to USA as a CR1 visa, now she has SSN and Green Card on hand.

My question is, Does she need Health Insurance immediately? will I get a penalty if she doesn't when I do my tax for this year? as she's only here for a month.

You shouldn't get a penalty because from what I recall one short gap of less than three months is allowed. For the other months of the year she will be exempt due to being out of the country.

However, when deciding if you want to risk going without insurance remember also that enrollment in marketplace insurance will close soon and many employer insurance policies will also have specific open enrollment periods, etc. And emergencies can be very expensive.

oh boy .. from what i knew and what our financial advisor said; we needed to have health plan ASAP. I had one (catastrophic) which was scheduled to start from the day I landed in USA (4 months back).  Not only on financial prospect but also it's sensible (you know and everyone knows how healthcare is expensive in US. Well everything is expensive here)

We tried looking for a health insurance for me by adding me to my wife's plan from her work. That was insanely expensive. Therefore I got myself a temporary health from some company. I did google search and found the company. Tons of health insurance people called once i started looking for insurance.  They were reputed but charged way to less around 145$ per month for health (I ignored dental and vision at that time to save money).

Now as I have landed a job they cover me for my health.

Get the health insurance .. that's much better and sensible thing to do.

I did a lot of research for girlfriend to have health insurance before we are married. I will choose https://www.***removed***.com/  (I do not work foe them or any insurance or have no financial interest of any kind with them). They have very good PPO network around country, 24 hour help phone number. So for me this was best choice. Once married I can add her to company insurance plan anytime I get certified copy of marriage license.

Best to you

There’s a three month exemption although if the new tax bill is approved, there’ll be no more penalty for not having insurance.

No fines next year.
