Unless you come to my table, take my order and bring me my order you aren't getting a tip.

Good point--and you'd also better get the order right the first time, coz' correcting it definitely does not make my mindset conducive tip-giving (not trivial: I've actually placed order for Spanish or Garden Omelette then waiter/waitress brings Western to the table)

The exception to that rule is if the KITCHEN f@'s it up... we went to IHOP for lunch and the place was almost deserted but the poor waitress was being so harassed it wasn't funny - they had a new guy in the kitchen and he was freaking incompetant and messing up every second order! In the end they didn't charge us for our lunch because we didn't get what I ordered, but I still gave her a tip because it wasn't her fault the kitchen guy was a few dozen IQ points short...

OR, if i order from the comfort of my own home and you have to be the one to waste your gas, go out in the unpredictable weather, and attempt to get my food to me while it is still warm..........then its a good tip for you!

I explained to my husband all about tipping here in the U.S., but I neglected to specify when it is necessary to tip. About a month after he got here I find out that he's been tipping everybody (even leaving a couple bucks at the service counter at fast food places!). Needless to say we've cleared that up - counter service people at Starbucks, etc. DO NOT make the tipping wage (less than $3 in most states), and SHOULD NOT be tipped!

I sometimes tip the person that makes my coffee for me - just depend on what kind of mood i'm in/they're in, I guess :) I used to work a job like that in high school and it was HARD work for $6.40 an hour - if they do a great job, I don't mind giving them a bit extra!

I had to educate my father on the tipping etiquette, and I have to admit that I still get a little antsy about it. I'm British, we don't tip our barstaff!

I refused to tip a barmaid in one place because of the truly appalling service she gave me (like serving my husband the minute he came up to the bar, despite the fact that I'd been stood there for twenty minutes AND I was the one paying for his drink!), and she approached me at the end of the evening and said "Didn't you know we make most of our money from tips?". I told her that I'm a salesperson, I make most of my money off of commissions and if I treated my customers the way that she'd treated me then I'd never make another sale! She didn't like that so much.

In my eyes, a "TIP" is just that - something which you EARN for good service, not your god-given right. If you were worth that much, the company would be paying you that much, so get off your ####### and earn the rest.

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

In most resturants here the waiter/waitress only make 2.15 or about an hours and must rely on tips to make a living, even for donuts.

Now more importantly where is my donuts?!!?!?

Oh I understand waiters and waitresses...that is if they give good service...but cashiers are a diff story...

Any chance u like chocolate glazed?? Sorry I ate the buttermilk...

OHHHHH choculate my favorite (send it in a plain paper package so the wife do not know lololol

12/31/07: Sent I-751 packet to Texas, the LONG wait begins once again!

01/03/08: Packed received.

I agree that it may not be a "God-given right", but wages for tipped professions are set that way because it is assumed that those people who work in those professions receive a certain amount of money per pay period in tips. A person SHOULD earn these tips in order to justify their low hourly wage.

I think many people would suggest that the separate, lower wage for these positions be abolished, leaving companies to set these wages as they see fit, thereby eliminating the tip "requirement".

Unfortunately that's just NOT the way it works in the food industry. Restaurants can and do pay appalling wages because they project that the waiter/waitress will receive tips making up the rest of their salary. It's disgusting that they can get away with it. No, it's not a God-given right and your waitress was wrong, working off of a stereotype that men tip better. But don't kid yourself that the wages in restaurants are fair or even that waiters and waitresses get all of their tips....especially when tips are also charged. They have to share with busboys and kitchecn staff often. AND on top of that, waiters and waitresses have to declare tips as income on their taxes (or are suppose to.)

I know, I know...if they don't like it, they should do something else. But for some folk, waiting tables fits their lives/schedules the best.

My daughter tells me that you only tip if you get good service i.e in restaurants and bars.

Long story short here, we were in St Augustine and had lunch in a diner, the gravy (apart from being WHITE!!!) was practically cold anyway being brits and not a nation of complainers  we never said anything but left a decent tip when we left. Told my daughter about it and she went balistic, felt like the tables had turned when she started telling me off!!!! (made a change)

You did right by leaving a tip. Was the waitperson rude to you? Can you attribute the bad food to poor service from your waitperson?

If you did not receive poor SERVICE, then you should leave a tip. If you are unsatisfied with the food quality, that is an issue to be taken up with the management, not reflected in the waitperson's tip.

I agree and Munchkins....you're gonna have to speak up and ask for hot gravy!!! If the waitress gives attitude, then the tip starts to vanish. But otherwise, she/he has no idea you aren't satisfied. You gotta tell them!

I overtip too...My dad owned restaurants pretty much all of my life so i grew up around waitresses. I guess i can sympathize with the amount of work they have to do (not just for the customers, but behind the scenes too!) So i overtip.....!
