Hi everyone,

I had a question for anyone out there. My wife now has a permanent residency card, she also has a social security card/number. But her boss says that her current Social Security card, which says, "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization" isn't good enough. Does she need to obtain a different Social Security card?

Thank you very much for the answer. Okay, we'll go to the Social Security offfice to remove the words from the card.

BTW - her boss is an idiot. The Green Card is the DHS authorization to work, she passes the requirements of the I-9 with it. Sure, get the SS card with the restrictions removed, but know that her boss is dead wrong.

I don't understand how it can be "not good enough". It a social security card, what else does this boss want? It's just as good with restrictions as without them, since your wife already has a green card.

Filed AOS from F-1
Green Card approved on 01/04/07
Conditions removed 01/29/09

Citizenship Oath 08/23/12

Yeah, and this is wrong as well. She has a Green Card, that's better than an EAD.

No wonder so many illegals work.... I wonder what kind of training these people have to hire employees. None... he should know that just a green card and a social security card are enough proof that your wife is authorized to work.

The person need only read the I-9 after all, let alone the DHS supplied employers manual. I guess I should feel good that at least an employer cares about whether people are actually employement authorized, even if they are getting it all wrong.

My husband's Human Resource department tried to state the social security card was a problem too! I can't believe a person with a degree in Human Resources doesn't know a green card is DHS authorization. I think it is crazy! My husband went to social security to receive a normal social security card.

Did your husband's updated SS card arrive? I went to SS office on April 19 and was told the same thing. I was given a letter that said it will take four weeks for SSA to verify my status with DHS. BTW, I received my physical green card on April 12.

My husband went to SSA this week. He has not received the new SS card yet. The letter states it should take two weeks to receive the new card.

They remove the words. Your SSN is always going to be your SSN no matter what. You'll never get a new number.
