I don't know about in other places, but where I live in California, the little children are not so "little". Especially, at younger ages. They are quite fat and much taller at a younger ages. It's become very common and accepting of children, that parents allow their children to have bodies that are quite out of proportion. I wonder if this was the reason why the parents never noticed their daughter being pregnant?

One thing I noticed was that the article said he was "having sex" with this girl for a year. They should have called it what it was: rape.

Poor girl. I can see how it wouldn't occur to her parents to worry about pregnancy. If you saw a fat nine-year-old, would you think she was pregnant or would you think she was just plump? Most nine-year-olds can't yet get pregnant, physically speaking.

Actually, the onset of puberty (and therefore menses) in women has been studied quite thoroughly, and a lot of it has to do with not only genetics, but overall weight and fat content in the body. Because the average nine or ten year-old girl is heavier than her counterpart a decade or more ago, they are going through puberty sooner and beginning their menstrual cycle at an earlier age.

My father is also a physician and he's told me about seeing ten year-old girls in the hospital (sometimes the emergency room) who are pregnant. I remember being told this many years ago too.

Given this data (and once again, these findings are all backed up by numerous studies, so I'm not just pulling the information out of my hat), it is quite possible that a nine year-old girl could be physically developed enough internally to become pregnant. I think it's repulsive that anyone that young would have intercourse, but that doesn't mean it's not happening.

Re bolded part, you mean it's repugnant that anyone would rape someone so young, right? As to whether it's physically possible ("given this data blablabla"), well of course it is. Women's normal range of menarche (first period) is like 8-13. most of us are on the higher end of that, although that may be changing. You are correct. I think it's revolting that anyone so young would be forced into intercourse -- either by rape or coercion or what have you. Obviously, this is a case of rape. The girl was under the legal age of consent for her state. I didn't see the need to keep on repeating the legalities or moralities of rape when it has been discussed to death already (in this thread and in others).

What I was doing, however, was responding to the post where Caladan says "Most nine-year-olds can't yet get pregnant, physically speaking." That is inaccurate, as you yourself pointed out.

This is the kind of crime, that I think besides giving the maximum allowable prison sentence to the offender, he should also be castrated. Though, he may have serious trouble coming out of jail "intact"....I've heard stories that even ciminals have a "moral code" of sorts, and crimes against the young are not tolerated. Hoping that will happen in this case....it would be well deserved. Sick fukco!!!!

Absolutely true that menarche depends on internal development and weight and other things; also true that most parents wouldn't assume their nine-year-old was able to get pregnant. Also true that while 8-13 is within the normal range in the U.S., 12 and a half is average. Most nine-year-olds aren't there yet...(when I said 'most' I didn't mean 'all', that's why I said 'most')... according to wiki:

"Less than 10% of US girls start to menstruate before 11 years, and 90% of all US girls are menstruating by 13.75 years of age, with a median age of 12.43 years. This age at menarche is not significantly different (0.34 years earlier) than that reported for US girls in 1973. And while it's certainly possible, which I didn't deny even in my original post (again, 'most' is not 'all', and surely 90% is most!)... would your first thought at seeing a fourth grader put on some weight be that she must be pregnant?
