This is Cheburashka. He's big time in Russia/CIS and now even Japan.

When I went to visit my girl over the summer, she gave me a small, musical, Cheburashka stuffed toy. Prior to that, I had never even heard of Cheburashka.

Does anyone on here have any experiences with this little... um... well, whatever the heck he is?

Yeah, he's been around for a while. Very popular with young kids. Did you get a chance to see the cartoon? I had no idea he was popular in Japan as well. Attached is the song and a funny picture.

May I answer? I know my experience doesn't actually count . Anyway Cheburashka is a main character of a children's book. He/it is a toy that was on sale at a toy's store but no one wanted to buy him because he looked ... a bit unusual and there wasn't even a name for him. Besides, he wasn't stable enough and used to tumble down constantly... So the author came up with a new russian word - "cheburashka", which derived from a verb form "cheburaryaknut'sya" or smth. This actually means "fall down".

Later on they've made a cartoon about Cheburashka and his friend Crocodile Gena...

Does my explanaition make any sense to you?

Cheburashka looks like a damn gremlin to me.

I know you’ll have a lot on your mind other than food when you visit the U.S. Embassy. However, just in case…. there is a small café, which is operated by some Orthodox nuns (I think), that’s about 2 or 3 blocks east or southeast of the Embassy. It’s a really small cafe, but the food is good and freshly made and cheap (the fresh baked bread is great), and it is one of only a few places where I have noticed Americans other than in the summer. Maybe you’ll get a chance to stop in there. Unfortunately, I don’t know the name of the place, but a query or two to people on the sidewalk should get you there.

Satellite, that's hilarious! I always wondered where Yoda came from. Another funny thing that happened while I was in Moscow visiting Elena was the Pepsi commercial with Yoda was on TV all the time. (The one where the guy was at the diner and Yoda Jedi-mindtricked him out of it.) Whenever I would drink Pepsi with my dinner or something, Elena would say "Pepsi ne ho-chish" in her best Yoda voice. Little things like that are what make me really miss being with her.

Yull, I totally understood your explanation. Good one, at that. That's basically the same story that Elena told me when she gave me the toy. I also had to do my best to listen to the song and translate it to her. Good times. I plan on having our (God willing) children read and watch Cheburashka. I think it's important that they have many Russian influences in their lives still, even if they live here.

Andrew... and everyone else... I'm not actually going to Moscow for the interview. It was supposed to be today, but Elena called and got it postponed until the 19th of April. So, new interview date is then. I didn't know it was even possible to do that, but she said it was very easy. Just called up and they gave her a 30 day extension. No problem. So, if any of you have paperwork issues or are trying not to spend thousands of dollars having Uncle Oleg fly around Kazakhstan to get the police check, have her call the embassy and get the extension. (Sorry Neonred, too little too late. But, I'm sure you're not too disappointed since your girl is keeping you warm now!!!)

As for medical exam secrets. I don't know. Elena is lucky enough (I guess) to be staying now in Vladivostok which is home to the other US consulate, and they have authorized checks there, so she'll have hers done before she goes to Moscow.

Thanks for the tip. While it is just about at my reading comprehension level, I think I'll stick with Master and Margarita for now.
